Queen Noor throughout the 90s wore often a dove of peace pin on her
lapel. It is jewelled in what looks to be white and black diamonds.
The thing that sets it apart is the gold chain that links a small
jewelled heart to the dove's beak. Does anyone know where she got it
or who would make such a brooch? Thank you. Mary Shawn

This is a long shot, but the closest match I could find so far. Could this be it?

"The sentimental 1800s saw the popularity of "message" jewelry?seen in
this collection in a gold and gemstone dove brooch, the dove with a
turquoise forget-me-not in its beak and a gold heart locket suspended
from its wing. The word "Regard" appears on the heart in gemstones,
encircled with pearls and cabochon rubies. The piece dates to 1830,
with an estimate of $4,000 to $6,000."

I have contacted an associate who is a jewelry expert- so I may be
able to track it down for you if this is not it. I'm still working on
it. Good luck!

I appreciate your help but don't think this could be it as she's been
wearing it since prior to King Hussein's death in 1999. In fact,
there is a photo of her with him in a mint green suit with it pinned
to the lapel. I want to insert the photo but don't know how.....do
you? And thank you for all your work on this.....we'll figure it out!

If you have an email address, I could send the photos I have. I don't
know if this is permitted but the only idea I've come up with....I can
also look for images on other sites and guide you.

I understood that we resolved this question on one of our previous
encounters here. Didn't you order the pin already from the man who
created the jewelry based on information I provided previously? I'm
certain he's the one who crafted them for her.

Ah yes, I understand now. After re-examining your previous question I
see that you ordered the pin but you are now looking for a diffeent
brooch. Excuse the instrusion please.

Yes, you are correct. I did find the simple gold one made by Amatai
Kav. This is larger and jewelled and different. Thank you.

The imamgine posting worked, thank you. Unfortunately the images do
not show the brooch closely enough to make out any significant detail.
Might you tell us where you found these particular photos and we can
begin there?

If it is possible to get some better closeups of the jewelry it would
be very helpful. A detailed image showing the heart would be
especially beneficial.

I'm still working on your question. I'll get back to you again soon.

I have found a great picture of the brooch with heart detail. My
brother in law has a photo studio and said he will scan it Monday AM
so I can send. Until then, many images are in the former Les Tribunes
Royale forum, now The Royal Forums in the Jordanian Royal Family
section. Rather than have you search around the site--which can be
time-consuming--I will again and continue to look for images but the
large photo of the brooch is our best bet, I think.
Thank you for your continuing help. Mary Shawn

I've since found one image (though not a very close up image) that
barely shows the dangling charm.

Yes, in sooo many of the images posted, it's so hard to see. This one
photo in the magazine shows the heart in great detail so it's our best
shot. Seeing the photos in person in magazines gives a pretty good
view but that's impossible as they are all older magazines and so let
me try this with Drew and see if the scan, once posted, shows enough
so you see what I'm talking about. Thank you again for all your help!
I was hoping she'd have it on on the first page of her website but,
no, she is pretty much jewelry-free there and on all subsequent
images; she has obviously pared it down as some of the photos I have
were on there a year ago. With appreciation, Mary Shawn

In the meantime I have personally contacted Amitai Kav in Jerusalem,
Israel (who created the flat, unadorned dove of peace pin we spoke of
in an earlier question of yours). He informed me that while he did
create the pin, he did not create this particular jeweled and heart
brooch piece for Her Majesty Queen Noor. This may put us back at
square one but I am determined, if I can, to find out where the dove
came from. Wish me luck.

Well, you see her wearing it often from about 1996-2001. She does
wear it from time to time today......but of course she has fewer royal
engagements and a more casual lifestyle so--well, she probably doesn't
have the opportunity or appropriate functions to wear it to--I'm
guessing here.

Tomorrow is her birthday. Maybe that will be a harbinger of good luck
once I send you the photo!

You can always hope, right?

I brought magazine w/photo of heart closeup to my brother in law's
studio today and he was off on a shoot. I left it and asked his
assistant to scan that particular page when he had a chance. Will
send as soon as I receive it. Just wanted to update you.

wish it was clearer. I may try to edit image and resend.

You won't need to just for my benefit. I've found a somewhat distant
photo of the piece that shows it as being black and silver and with
what appears to be some gilding and stones.

I believe the piece Queen Noor wears is probably an antique. What
makes the brooch so unusual in my opinion is that the dove?s wings are
spread, almost in a ?view from above? position. This is fairly unusual
for much of today?s jewelry, as the majority of pieces I have seen
with spread wings seem to be crafted in profile. This was not always
so with Victorian and Edwardian jewelry where size and space was not
particularly an issue. I do not believe the brooch is Victorian
however because the jewelry from that era was relatively gaudy and
harsh looking in today?s terms, not to mention that the work was
largely somewhat one-dimensional and the craftsmanship is not nearly
as find as that of Queen Boor?s brooch.

NELSON RARITIES
http://www.nelsonrarities.com/dir01-2/Welcome.html
(No dove here, just misc. jewelry)

On the other hand, the Edwardian jewelry I have seen does appear to
match the style at least as seen in this much smaller example I found
[minus the hanging heart charm or course]

NELSON RARITIES
http://www.nelsonrarities.com/nr01edwardian.jpg
(small green brooch bottom right)

Take a look at this Edwardian Dove Brooch (circa 1900) with a ruby eye
and diamonds set in platinum top on a gold back. (1 7/8" x 1 5/8").
This does not have the hanging heart either but it is a fine example
of an Edwardian dove brooch from the Peggy Z. Dunner jewelry
collection. This particular piece retails for $4500.00:

http://www.pzdjewelry.com/209-02.jpg
http://www.pzdjewelry.com/gold2.htm

I ruled out Art Deco and Art Nuevo styles (in my mind at least)
because of the detail but that is not to say that someone could not
have made such a thing. I do know however, as I mentioned earlier,
that Amatai Kav did not make it, and that word comes directly from the
man himself.

I found a possible reference to the symbolism of the dove/heart
combination. In speaking of a written sermon, this religious site
says:

?Underneath the title is a drawing of a dove, symbolic of the Holy
Spirit, and from the beak of the dove, you will notice that the dove
is holding onto a heart (drawing) and inside that heart are words:
?Deep Feelings of thanksgiving, compassion, charitable love, and
wanting to help others.?

?As you remember from the first overhead, the key is the dove that is
the Holy Spirit that is carrying a compassionate heart in its beak.
Many of you can afford to do this.?

SERMONS FROM SEATTLE
http://www.sermonsfromseattle.com/stwerardship_walking_in_the_way_of_the_lord.htm

This does evoke a Christian symbolism but one must remember that Queen
Noor was raised a Christian but converted to Islam primarily as a
matter of convenience, to make possible her marriage to a man who was
not just a Muslim monarch, but also a Hashemite, a descendant of the
founding prophet, Muhammad, with all the weight of history and piety
that entails. While she is Islamic she may very well still hold to her
Christian ideology (or at the very least still respect or regard that
belief), but this is just speculation on my part.

This grief support site offers another symbolism perhaps that might be
equally applicable:

?In Loving Memory's emblem is a dove holding a heart. The empty heart
symbolizes the hole that will always remain in the hearts of grieving
parents. The dove represents the peace that comes as the lifelong
process of grief and healing unfold.?

IN LOVING MEMORY
http://www.inlovingmemoryonline.org/about_us.html

Noor has clearly had her share of grief having lost loved ones in
recent years. This piece may also be symbolic of that loss.

At any rate, I have wracked my brain and the best I can come up with
(short of hearing from Queen Noor herself, whom I wrote to several
times in the last week or so with no response), I?d venture to guess
that this particular piece of jewelry is vintage and that we aren?t
likely to establish a provenance for it.

I hope this helps. After an exhaustive effort it may be the best we can do.

No, this is good work on your part. I have some ideas now and would
like to pay you for your work, which has been extensive, for me. I
actually love the brooches.....$4500 is a lot but one would keep it
forever......This is good. Really good. You've more than earned the
fee. And my thanks......and deepest appreciation!

Dear Mary;

At your request I am posting this so as to officially close your question.

Thank you for your generosity. As always it has been a pleasure to
work with you. I am disappointed that I have not been able to come up
with a definite answer to your question and I wish I could have found
the source of the jewelry. On the other hand, I believe we are much
closer to finding a source by eliminating some other sources.

Needless to say, I am extremely pleased with your offer to compensate
me for my time even though it was not totally productive. You are
indeed an honorable customer and one whose integrity and generosity is
the yardstick by which all others should be measured.

I sincerely thank you and look forward to working with you again in the future.
