I understand the Carolina Panthers' logo is based on the outline of
the states of North and South Carolina. If you look at it closely, it
is easy to see. Where is this fact documented?

Dear allenjwsc-ga

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question.

"One of the most frequently asked questions of the Hall of Fame?s
research staff is how a particular NFL team chose its name. Sometimes
the answer is obvious and other times it is not so clear-cut."

"Team owner Jerry Richardson?s son Mark [who is now President of the
organization] is responsible for the selection of Panthers as the team
name. Mark, who felt that there should be some ?synergy? between the
name and the team colors also suggested the team colors of black, blue
and silver."

Apparently Richardson didn't select the panther as the team mascot
BECAUSE the outline of the states seem to represent a panther (after
all, almost any cat's head would do the same thing), but rather he had
the panther logo DESIGNED in that shape after deciding on his team
colors. Obviously, Richardson liked the idea of black, blue and silver
as strong team colors and a panther mascot not only fit the color
scheme but also could be incorporated into the legendary shape of the
states:

"Team owner Jerry Richardson?s son Mark is responsible for the
selection of Panthers as the team name. Mark, who felt that there
should be some ?synergy? between the name and the team colors also
suggested the team colors of black, blue and silver.

Logo:
A black Panther head in the shape of the Carolina states, with a blue
out line and silver whiskers, eyes, mouth and nose."
