Here is the answer I received:

Dear Mr. Miller,

Thank you for your inquiry about what Will Rogers may have written
about farmers likened to gamblers. I checked our database of Rogers?
writings, some two million words worth. The words ?farmer? or
?farmers? appear 316 times. I found one reference that comes closest
to the quote you provided:

?You know there is nothing that hollers as quick and as loud as a
gambler. They even blame it on Hoover?s fedora hat. Now they know what
the farmer has been up against for eight years? [published in his
syndicated daily newspaper column, 25 October 1929].

The quote came in the midst of the stock market crash of 1929 and
referred to stock speculators as gamblers and the effects of the
crash.

Perhaps a quote more appropriate to the meaning you were seeking to
confirm came from Rogers?s syndicated weekly newspaper column of 13
January 1924 and refers to the annual habit of asking prominent people
to make New Year?s forecasts about business trends:

?Instead of asking [industrialist Elbert H.] Gary what he thinks, why
don?t they ask a farmer. There is 10 million farmers and only one
Gary. See what the farmer is paid every year for his optimism. And he
has to be an optimist or he wouldn?t still be a farmer.?

I trust the above helps meet your needs. Thank you for your interest
in Will Rogers.

I was looking for a fuller answer that goes into the variables about
why a farmer is the biggest gambler. Thanks for you help. How do I
release the payment to you?

ediet-ga,

Since cmiller-ga is not a Google Answers Researcher, payment is not an
option. One of the most interesting things about Google Answers is
that sometimes you'll receive useful information for free (after the
mandatory fifty-cent listing fee).

You can tell GA Researchers from other site users by looking at the
way the username is displayed. Only Google Answers Researchers' names
are highlighted in blue and "clickable." Other usernames are standard
bold text.
