According to psychologist and researcher Patrick Carnes Ph.D, an
estimated 8% of the total population of men and 3% of women are
sexually addicted.

"The National Association of Sexual Addiction Problems estimated that
6 to 8 percent of Americans are sex addicts, which is 16 to 21.5
million."

?Patrick Carnes, Ph.D., the researcher who first identified sexual
addiction as a condition, has estimated that about 8% of men and 3% of
women from the population in the US are sexually addicted. This
constitutes over 15 million people in this country alone?

?The case is a horror story of sex addiction, a disorder not
officially recognized by the American Psychiatric Association but one
that many psychiatrists are becoming increasingly concerned about.
About 8 percent of men in the United States (and 3 percent of women)
have the disorder, but few of those affected are getting the help they
need.?

Sexual addiction: three fourths are men

?Although the exact prevalence of sexual addiction is unclear, one
expert estimates that there are 9 million sex addicts in this country,
and approximately three fourths of them are men. Another nationally
recognized authority places the figure at 15 million.?

I appreciate the number and variety of answers. It appears that Dr.
Carnes has stated that 8% of men and 3% of men in the US are sex
addicts. Others put forward similar statistics, perhaps following Dr.
Carnes. What I would like to know is how did Dr. Carnes (or others)
arrive at these numbers? A scientific survey? An informal survey of
professional psychologists? A "seat of the pants" guess, based on
professional experience? I would be particularly interested if some
scientific method has been used. I have queried Dr. Carnes, but he has
not responded.

Thank you for any clarifications you can provide.

There is no more authoritive source than the Holy Bible.
Sex addiction like any addiction is not only a mental issue but a
spirtual issue as well. Polls taken by fallible man, are not to
accurate, as fallible men tend to make up most of our information
today, especially on subjects they actually know little about.
People who do not know Christ and are not saved will be prime targets
for items such as addictions to sinful practices, depression, and
wicked deeds in general.
Sex was designed by God to be used only between a man and wife, not
unwed people, not to be sold on videos, not to be used immoraly.
When we use God designed instruments for something other than what God
intended it for, there will always be consequences of some degree.
The bondage of something like sexual addiction can seem hopeless
trying to get out of it, but there is hope. And that hope does not
lie in, sitting on a couch with a shrink, not in a bottle of meds. But
in becoming spiritualy reborn through Jesus Christ.
