Dear Bob,
If you want to study film production, there are several good film
schools that would be suitable for you.
The filmmaker store lists the following:
* AFI
* California Institute of the Arts
* Columbia University School of the Arts
* The North Carolina School of the Arts
* NYU
* San Francisco State University
* UCLA
* USC
* University of Texas at Austin
SOURCE: The Filmmaker Store, "Film Schools"
<http://filmmakerstore.com/schools.htm>
The Filmmaking Net has a similar list: "By far the most respected film
schools in the US are:
* University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA)
* University of Southern California (USC)
* The American Film Insitute( AFI)
* New York University (NYU) "
(SOURCE: Filmmaking Net <http://www.filmmaking.net/faq/showfaq.asp?id=120>)).
Of those, the following are in LA:
The American Film Institute
P.O. Box 27999/ 2021 North Western Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90027
213.856.7600
Fax: 213.467.4578
<http://www.afi.com/education/Conservatory/>
(Their MFA in production specialises more on the artistic aspects of
film production, not on the financial/management side. However, they
have a nice list of graduates, and you are being taught by people from
the industry).
University of California, Los Angeles
Department of Film and Television
Box 951622
Los Angeles CA 90095-1622
<http://www.filmtv.ucla.edu/>
(They have a special programme in production, for people who want to
become producers, which is probably ideal for you).
University of Southern California
Los Angeles, CA 90089-0911
213.740.1111
<http://www-cntv.usc.edu/>
They also have a production programme. More improtantly, they have a
programme, with the School of Business, which focuses in TV/Film
production ("The Business of Entertainment"):

Filmmaking Net also write "Interestingly, it is not USC, UCLA or any
of the glamour schools who have the largest number of alumni creating
celluloid dreams - it is LA City College. Statistics aside, it's also
a hell of a lot cheaper to attend than most of the other schools
mentioned. Worth consideration..." (ibid)
LA City College's department could be found here :
Department of Cinema and Television

The Filmmaking Net recommends the following books:
" * Film School Confidential : The Insider's Guide to Film Schools,
by Karin Kelly, Tom Edgar
* The Complete Guide to American Film Schools and Cinema and
Television Courses , by Ernest Pintoff
* The Complete Guide to Animation and Computer Graphics Schools,
by Ernest Pintoff (et al) " (ibid)
I join with a further recommendation:
Producing, Financing, and Distributing Film/a Comprehensive Legal and
Business Guide
by Paul A. Baumgarten, Donald C. Farber, Mark Fleischer
If you read the list provided on the Filmmaker Store, you probably
noticed, that two universities outside LA offer programmes that
integrate business aspects:
University of Texas at Austin
College of Communication
Department of Radio-TV-Film
University of Texas at Austin
Austin, Texas 78712
512.475.7399
<http://www.utexas.edu/coc/rtf/index.html>
Here you could choose a join programme with the department of
business, though I haven't found the programme on their site, and they
might have discontinued it - you should check with them.
NYU also claims to stress business aspects in its MFA programme:
New York University
70 Washington Square South
New York, New York 10012
