Hi leetim,
The following steps will restore your menu bar (you will loose any
customizations that you made to that toolbar).
Right-click on any toolbar.
Select "Customize" on the list that comes up.
In the "Toolbar" tab, select "Worksheet Menu Bar".
Click the "Reset" button.
Please let me know how that goes so I'll know whether to post this as
an answer or to continue working to find a solution.
Good luck,
hummer

I tried that and did reset - but makes no diff. It was the standard
toolbar that I chose?

Mr hummer-ga - that clarification was not quite right - it is not the
standard toolbar that is the problem. I can get that and hide it
easily. It is the menu on the top like all office progs. I have a
computer next to me working okay and that has file, edit, view, insert
and so on - all with drop down menus. This only shows acrobat

If you have the installer, try reinstalling Office by using the
"Repair Office" and choosing "Detect and Repair errors in my Office
installation" option?

Tried repairing - but does not make any diff. Perhaps is I were to
remove and reinstall, it may do the trick, but the trouble is I may
lose a lot of what I have installed in word and outlook. Think I will
just get on with it, as I can use the standard toolbar to get what I
want. Was just that I wanted to get vba and I can do that with shift
F11 anyway. THanks a lot

Hi leetim,
To answer your clarification question regarding the standard toolbar -
no, that's not it.
On the customize menu that comes up, "Worksheet Menu Bar" should be
one of the options on the Toolbar tab (it is the first menu option on
my Excel). The "Worksheet Menu Bar" should already be checked and if
it's not, just checking it may solve your problem. Otherwise, put a
check mark next to "Worksheet Menu Bar" and remove all the other check
marks on the other options. Click Reset. When you are done, return any
check marks that you removed and make sure "Worksheet Menu Bar" is
still checked.
I hope that helps,
hummer
