Question ID: 390965
I have two questions. First: As some web sites publish text documents
as a picture, I wonder if there is a way or a software which can
convert such documents to a text in order to use part of the text as a
quotation or edit it. I know that I can solve this problem by printing
the docuemnt and then scan it, but I am not looking for such a
solution. The second question is that when I try to print a
document/picture which is longer than one page, only the first page
prints. My Toshiba has Windows XP and word 2000. Please see if you
can help me.

I may be able to help you with your two questions. Re your first
question, are you willing to purchase the necessary software that
you'll need in order to be able to do what you intend to do? What's
your budget if ever?

Do you have a graphic or DTP software such as Photoshop or other
graphic programs (if any)? What printer do you use?

Clarification of Question by zaker-ga on 21 Aug 2004 22:57 PDT
My printer is HP Laser Jet 6L. I have a canon scanner which has
photobase and photostudio which I have never used. I use only Omnipage
for scanning.

Thanks for your reply. Some further clarifications:

What kind of text image do you want to convert? Is it this type

What version is your Omnipage? The latest is Omnipage Pro 14.

Are you familiar with OCR?

What browser are you using - Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla?

Thanks. I hope this answer is helpfuul
1. The text image I want to convert is similar to the one you proposed.
2.My version of Omnipage is SE as follows:
Specs of my scanner are;

4. I know the following. I use it for scanning pages of text.
?Optical Character Recognition. The ability of a computer to recognize
characters optically.OCR programs are used with scanners to enter text
into the computer when there is already a hardcopy version.A page of
text scanned with OCR does not read as a graphics file, the way other
scanned images do.It can be edited and formatted just like any other
text file.Text scanned with OCR will lose some of its formatting, and
when a letter is indistinct, the program will guess, so typos can
creep in.?

Hi Zaker,

Thank you very much for all the details you've given me. Here's are my answers:

For question number 1
You already have the software you need. Omnipage SE is an OCR program
that you can use not just for scanning but also to convert text images
into editable characters. It's so easy to use. As an example, let's
use the link I've given you in my request for question clarification.
1) Right-click on http://satyr.msfc.nasa.gov/tideteam/psi_workshop/SINGH/B100nT/text-p1.jpg
and choose "Save Target As..." to save the image as a jpeg file to
your desired location.
2) Open Omnipage SE then click on "Manual OCR" on the interface menu.
Click on" Get page>Load File" then locate and lick the jpeg file that
you have saved. The image will load in the middle pane. From there,
position your cursor to click and select the are where you want to
perform OCR. You then click on step 2 -- Perform OCR where you can
simply choose "Automatic" or define your settings via it's drop-down
menu. As an example, choose Automatic. You will see that the text on
the jpeg image file has been converted to editable characters in the
last pane. There you can edit the texts to your desired format, select
and copy it to another file, or click on step 3 to save it as a file.
This completely answers your question number 1.

As with all automated processes, there are always imperfections and
limitations and you have to understand this point. You probably may
not be able to perform OCR on special fonts, colored texts, etc. If
the type that you need to OCR is like the example we used, you will
not have any other problem aside from the editing and proofreading. i
can only tell you that OCR is best done on black text with clear or
plain background. So if ever you encounter colored images that you
want to OCR, it would be better if you can convert it to black and
white. Negative text or white text on black is also easy to OCR.

For question number 2
Check your print settings first before proceeding to print. This is
the purpose of "Print Preview" option. Check if your page range
setting is set to 1 by default. If this is the case and if there are 5
pages to print, only the first page will print. Change the setting to
"All" -- that's it. In some instances, you may also use the "Fit to
page" option to scale down and fit the document in one page.

If the problem remains, you probably have a software problem. This is
a rare thing but I've encountered this some years ago while fixing a
client's PC. I solved it by installing the latest driver for the
printer. If this is the case with your situation, you can download the
driver for your device via this link:

Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.
HP Support & Driver Page -- LaserJet 6L Printer Driver
http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=software&h_query=6l&submit.x=0&submit.y=0

I'm not sure about the exact model and specs of your printer so please
make sure to choose the correct model and the correct driver for your
OS.

Search strategy:

Personal knowledge plus search on HP 6L driver.

I hope this helps you. If you have a question, please feel free to
post your clarification and I'll attend to you as soon as possible.
Thanks for asking.

Best regards,
Feilong

The first part was OK. Thank you so much. As for number 2 I tried to
print with (All)as you told me, but it prints only the first page. I
wrote
1-3 but it did not work, but got the first page again. I downloaded
the driver, I got c:\lj631en - but when I tried to open it, it became
15 files. I tried to open the first one, i got a notice saying:
windows cannot open it and took me to web site to find a program to
open it, but it was unknown. Usually when I download a driver it get
installed by double clicking. I feel embarrassed for making work more
than necessary. Thanks

Thank you for your reply. Right-click on this link and choose "Save Target As..."
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/software/lj631en.exe

lj631en.exe is an executable file. When you click on it, it expands
into several files. Look for the "lj456p5.inf" file and remember this
one.

Make sure to turn on your printer. Go to Control Panel and click on
System. Click on the Hardware tab and choose Device Manager. Locate
your printer, right-click on it and choose "Update Driver..."

Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click
Next to continue.

Make sure to check "Include this location in the search:" then click
on browse to select the folder where"lj456p5.inf" file is located.
Choose OK then click Next. Windows should automatically install the
driver for you.

I hope this solves it. If it doesn't, let me know and we'll try another one.

I found "lj456p5.inf", looked in the task manager, but i did not find
the printer. I clicked and opened all the +s, it is not there. The
printer has the green light in front which means it is on. I will
watch this site until 2 o'clock. thanks.

"I found "lj456p5.inf", looked in the task manager"

You will never find the printer in the Task Manager. What I said was
Device Manager. Please read and follow the instructions very carefully
or else none of the given suggestions will help. If possible, please
recheck the instructions in the original answer. Given the situation,
it is likely you have missed a part of the given instruction.

I am sorry, I wrote task manager by mistake. I confirm that there is
no printer in the device manager. control panel>system>hardware>device
manager. To be sure I called Toshiba and they told me there is no
printer in the device manager. There is a printer icon in the control
panel, I right clicked it and clicked property but there is no "update
driver" anywhere. Toshiba did not know how to install the new driver.

I foud an add printer driver wizard when I clicked the printers icon.
I chose my printer model and the wizrad installed the driver. I tried
printing the same graphic page and it printed only the first page. I
do not know what driver the wizard installed-the proocess was very
quick, I could not read it. Is this the same what you wanted me to do
through the device manager? I dound a web site speaking of this
problem, but I could not understand it. It is

It certainly is not. I clearly said that you need to update via the
device manager. What you did was reinstall the driver via the add
printer driver wizard. I'd like to help you but at this point I think
you get confused by the instructions. Given the situation, my advice
is that it would be much better for you to bring your system to a
computer shop and let a professional install the driver and resolve
the problem for you.

You deserve the stars for solving the first problem. If you do not
have time do not worry about installing the driver and printing the
graphic text.
