we are looking to sponsor overseas trained general practitioner
doctors to immigrate to Australia to practice in "areas of medical
shortage". They must have 4-5 years of clinical experience and speak
english. Indian or Iranian etc trained doctors as well as any Western
trained doctors would be acceptable. How can I contact these doctors
who may want to be sponsored to come to Australia

<Overseas trained doctors.

These doctors can be contacted via their professional associations and
via journals aimed at general practitioners. There is also a database
of refugee doctors resident in the UK who are seeking work (979
doctors are registered).

BMA ? refugee doctors database.
The British Medical Association and the Refugee Council have set up a
voluntary register for refugee and asylum-seeking doctors resident in
Britain who would like to resume a medical career. So far 979 refugee
doctors mostly from Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran have registered. 142
doctors have passed the necessary exams that qualify them to work in
the UK and are seeking work. A further 91 doctors are waiting to sit
the final qualification exam.

The British NHS (National health service) is also recruiting overseas
doctors. Their approach was to appoint heart surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub
to promote the ?International Fellowship Scheme? under which overseas
doctors will be able to come to work in the NHS and carry out
research.

The NHS has placed adverts in medical journals in Australia, Canada,
USA, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden
and Switzerland next month.

The New England Journel of Medicine is read world wide by doctors,
most of whom read English, but may have poor comprehenion of spoken
English and thick accents when they try to speak Australian English.
The TV show "the crocodile hunter" is helping. The Magazine carries
many ads by doctors looking for new jobs, whom you can contact by
telephone to assess their spoken English. You can also place help
wanted ads. At latest report replies were by box number, however you
can ask the doctor to call you. Be sure and help them understand the
large time difference to most of the world.
