Question ID: 391499
I am trying to find the name of a particular children's book I
remember from when I was about 5 years old. This would have put the
book in circulation circa 1987. I can only remember certain scenes
from the book which I will describe here.

- the book was about a girl in various strange situations
- i remember one scene where she is laying in bed at nighttime and
there are monster's eyes coming from the closet, from under the rug,
from under the bed
- i remember one scene where the girl is being sucked down the drain in a bathtub
- i remember one scene where the girl is being sucked underneath the
steps of an escalator

I want to say that the book was called: "There's a Nightmare in my
Closet" but I know that is not right, because I have found that book
and it is not the same. Perhaps it is something like: "There is a
Monster in my Closet" or "There is a Monster Under my Bed" or "There
is a Nightmare Under my Bed".

Any help is appreciated.

Do you remember anything about the cover?

This is just a shot in the dark, but could it be "What Can I Dream
About?" (1987) by Arnold Shapiro?

"When Deborah thinks of all the scary things she might dream about,
her mother turns these fears into funny situations in which Deborah is
in control."

Hello xenomaniac-ga,

Could the book you are looking for be "There's Something in My Attic"
by Mercer Mayer, originally published in 1988.

Amazon.com
There's Something in My Attic
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0140548130/ref=pd_sim_books_1/104-5429508-8516748?v=glance&s=books
"PreSchool-Grade 2 Mayer's third book about nightmares features a
feisty girl in blonde pigtails, nightgown, cowboy hat, and boots. When
Mom and Dad don't believe that there's a nightmare in the attic, she
decides to lasso it and bring it downstairs to show them. The fat
friendly dragon-like monster appears with the girl's teddy bear and
won't give it back. She pulls it down with the lasso to her parent's
room, but it slips away, and she vows to retrieve her bear tomorrow."

Thanks for the responses, but it does not seem like these books match
what I am looking for.

I seem to remember that the artwork was much more cartoon-ish, and I
think I remember the cover being something like: showing the outside
of her house at night, maybe with some glowing eyes looking out the
window

but yeah, the covers and artwork of the books you have links to seems
much more soft, almost painted like - i remember the artwork for this
book being very cartoonish

- keep in mind this is a book I am trying to remember from 17 years
ago, so my memory may be a off - i could be wrong completely about
what I am saying, but I appreciate the help :)

Could it be "I used to be afraid" by Sally H. McMillan? Unfortunately,
I don't have a link to a cover image, but here is the description:

Six-year-old Sara's imaginary friend Kandu helps her overcome her fear
of elevators, bathtubs, escalators and the closet monster.
