For internet commerce does my company need to be a credit card
merchant or are the hosting services that include this feature?

There are hosts that will include e-commerce functionality, but it's
usually quite expensive.

The best choices for a small online company wanting to accept credit cards are:

http://www.2checkout.com/
$49 setup fee, plus $0.45 per sale, plus 5.5% of sale amount

http://www.PayPal.com
If you have a PayPal business account you can accept credit cards
