Question ID: 391628
I have been investigating general sluggishness of my computer. I have
uninstalled or disabled a large number of things, including virus
scanner, etc. At this point, there are a minimal set of tasks
running. However, my computer often hangs for a few seconds (usually
less than 10) for no apparent reason.

One thing that bugs me is that the CPU usage and System Idle Task % of
CPU are out of synch. For instance, it will read 33% CPU usage but
System Idle Task is 97%.

Specifically, my question is, shouldn't CPU usage = 100% - {system idle task}.

In other words, if CPU usage is 33%, I should see a set of tasks that
add up to 33% usage, and system idle task of 67%. The math doesn't
add up in my task manager.

What could be causing this?

Where, in Task Manager, are you looking at CPU usage -
on the Processes page, or on the Performance page?

The Performance page may not update as quickly as the
Processes page. If you go to the Processes page and
click on the CPU column, it will rank the processes
by CPU usage, and the top several processes should
update quickly and add up to 100%.

The Performance page only updates about once a second.

Does this occur when you have ran Adobe reader? This has been know to
cause the error your describing? If so uninstall and reinstall adobe.
