Sometime in the mid '90s I remember seeing an article (maybe archived
on a Gopher site) which stated the exact number of "paces without the
camp" where one had to go to relieve oneself. This referred to a
requirement somewhere in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, or
Deuteronomy. I am aware of Deuteronomy 23:12-14 which states simply
"without the camp" but not how many paces. A professional holy person
has suggested that it might be included in the Jewish Midrash
(commentary on scripture). A reference URL to this information would
be greatly appreciated. After all, if rules for proper sanitation can
also be sanctioned by Diety, so much the better.

Hi buckcreek, respectfully, I think you may have missed the point of
the scripture. And that is that the Jews at that time were
operating/living under the direct management of God, acting through
Moses. The instruction to go outside the camp for ablutions was to
maintain the general health of the very large population. The Book of
Numbers is very specific on the actual numbers of people in the
various twelve tribes, and these getting larger every day. Also
considering they were in a very dry area with limited water
facilities. The Bible does not say so, but as a very intelligent
people, the Jews may even have had some type of temporary toilet
facilities built. Having myself being involved in opening up new
country with no infrastructure at all [ newly started crayishing areas
on the west coast of Australia in the early 60`s] the very first thing
we did was to establish a septic system, with the two tanks, and then
we had to cart the water so they would operate. And for year after we
got by with rainwater tanks. Thirty years have gone by before a
regular piped water supply was available to these areas. The Jews in
their wanderings did not have the option of settling down. In Exodus
13;21, the Jews travels were directed by the pillar of cloud in the
day and the pillar of fire at night. They only shifted camp when the
pillar of cloud lifted from the Tabernacle or Tent of Meeting.
Considering these days we have toilets inside the house, and because
of modern plumbing, still stay healthy, the distance from the camp
that the Jews had to maintain is a "healthy" distance and not
specifically mentioned in the Bible. And as opposed to the very
specific numbers stated in the Book of Numbers.
