Large multilegged creature that I mistook for a Hummingbird. It was
irridescent green and hovering over a pile of dog feces. Multifaceted
eyes and a beaky type nose...like a hummingbirds'. Spring summer
Southeastern NY.

Howdy scunge,

I am pretty sure you spotted a hummingbird moth. I have seen them myself
and thought they were the "real deal" as well. Check out the images on
these web pages please.

Howdy scunge,

You have verified you spotted a hummingbird moth. I have seen them myself
and thought they were the "real deal" as well. Theere are some images of
these little marvels of mimicry on these web pages.

The first time I saw one, I was extremely surprised as well. I never knew
that a moth could mimic a hummingbird that well, and I wasn't convinced
until I saw one land on a flower and wasn't moving.

If you need any clarification, feel free to ask.
