I hope this question isn't in response to an email you may have
recieved from someone in Africa telling you a sad story about a
dead/imprisoned relative and millions of dollars in cash that needs an
agent in the united states.

Hi, I asked this question because I am writing a book about my time
in Africa working for Louis Leakey. I was very close to Bruce
McKenzie's entourage and know a lot about Myoba's murder and spy
activities during that period. I also knew Charles Njonjo and some of
what he was doing as a member of the Kiambu mafia. Since my book is
non-fiction I just want to get the details right.

Judy --

Bruce McKenzie gets mentioned in several books about British and other
intelligence activities. This source cites several of them:
http://www.namebase.org/main1/Bruce-Mckenzie.html

I ordered a copy of Joseph C. Goulden's book, "The Death Merchant: The
Rise and Fall of Edwin P. Wilson" (1984) because Frank Terpil, an
associate of Wilson's was allegedly responsible for McKenzie's murder.
According to the book, McKenzie was present with a stuffed Kenyan cob
(antelope) that contained a bomb. Terpil told others the story that
"Amin's speech ran so long that I was afraid the damned thing would
explode while the plane was still at Kampala airport. So I had to
send a guy aboard to set the time back another half-hour."

Frank Terpil was a low-level CIA technician who Goulden says was fired
for misconduct. He then became an arms merchant, operating a company
called Intercontinental Technology, which supplied Amin's regime.

There's no other mention of McKenzie in the book.

The April 18, 1979 New York Times -- in an article titled
"Secret-Police Records Reveal Vast Paranoia of Idi Amin's Regime" ==
notes that Keith Savage was on the plane with McKenzie. After the
fall of Amin, the Kenyans held Robert Astles, a British-born aide to
Amin, in the murder. (The NY Times says that the gift containing the
bomb was a ceremonial lion's head.)

A final note: I was one of the Peace Corps volunteers held hostage at
Entebbe Airport by Amin in July, 1973.

I knew the book and its contents but didn't have access to the New
York Times article and don't know who Keith Savage was. That would
certainly be helpful to know if he was one of the two people that I am
searching for. If I could find Bruce Mckenzie's daughter she would be
able to tell me. And if you want to share your experience as hostage
I would be very interested in knowing what you went through
personally. My email is judycruze@mindspring.com. Thank you for your
help. Judy

Judy --

Here I was hoping that including his name would help shed some light
on the crash for you! Here's what some additional web searching turns
up:

Nairobi Sunday Nation
http://www.nationaudio.com/News/DailyNation/17082003/News/Amin_News170820034.html

"Mr Mackenzie was on board a plane travelling back to Nairobi after a
business trip in Kampala on May 24, 1978, when it blew up near Ngong
town, as it was descending to land at Wilson Airport, killing him and
the pilot and two other passengers, identified as Mr Keith Savage and
Mr Gavin Whitelaw."

There is some genealogical information about Savage here, including his children:
http://www.serendipitynz.co.nz/Gerhold/f11.htm

Google search strategy:
"keith savage" + mckenzie
"keith savage" + kenya

Here's an off-the-wall suggestion: try contacting the journalist who
wrote the Sunday Nation article.
