Dear tkthomas,
To pronounce "Löwe", please follow this simple hints:
- the "L" is pronounced like in English, for example in "Lion".
- the "ö" is a bit more tricky. Try to pronounce it like the "u" in
the English word "fur"; that would come very close to the ö-umlaut.
This is also the letter you should accentuate.
- the "w" sounds like the English "v".
- the "e" at the end is not mute. Make it sound like "uh", with no
pausing break between it and the preceding "v"-sound.
So try to pronounce "Löwe" like this, taking into account the tips above: "lu-vuh".
"Löwe" is male, so the correct article is "der" - "der Löwe". Keep in
mind that in German, the article (and the ending) also indicate the
grammatical case, so don't be surprised to read or hear "den Löwen"
(nominative), "des Löwen" (genitive), "dem Löwen" (dative) and again
"den Löwen" (accusative). But when using the word without any specific
grammatical context, the basic "der Löwe" is fully adequate.
Hope this helps!
