Hi there! As of June 30, I no longer have a full-time "normal" job and
have been searching for another one. I am currently working 2nd and
3rd shifts (including weekends) for a short-duration project, so I
will again be out of work shortly. Unfortunately, I have been unable
to get through the recruiting system gauntlet and connect directly to
the actual people hiring in the different companies.
The current recruiting system around the Raleigh NC area uses a layered system:
1. The basic front-end recruiter who is brainless and talks to you
2. The "Technical Gateway" who reviews the resumes to ensure the
buzzwords and phraseology match the job description being applied for
3. The customer's HR interface, who checks what the Technical Gateway provided
4. The manager in charge of reviewing the resume and scheduling the
interviewing (and who issued the req for the person)
5. The decision-maker
Every layer has their own requirements and constraints, and thus far I
have not been able to figure them out. Two recruiters described their
setup in this manner.
Plus, in senior network/systems engineering positions, the interviewer
or recruiter (or both) gives lab or written exams as part of the
interview process. I actually ask recruiters if the position I am
applying for has this requirement. I am not scared of them, just want
to be prepared. (and I used to administer lab exams, so I can be evil
too :-) )
I have rewritten my resume into three flavors: IT Project Management,
IT Security & Audit, and IT Availability & Support (aka network and
systems engineering). I have also tried to "network" by attending
different meetings and conventions. But thus far I have had no luck
going through the front door.
Can anyone please tell me how I can reach level 4 and 5, bypassing the
recruiters? I plan to go to the library and examine business
references (like Chamber of Commerce listing). This is to establish a
list of names and companies to mail my resume directly to them (with a
cover letter, of course). Barring this, what is the best methodology
in gathering names, addresses, and company information to send my
resume to the actual decision-makers?
Thanks in advanced. --GIF |

One clarification: I do not mean to insult any recruiters out there,
so sorry if I did. I have sent over a hundred resumes since March '04,
and I have had zero face-to-face interviews with actual clients but
lots of interviews with recruiters. I even send "thank you" cards to
the recruiters and be professional about it, but overall I get
nowhere. Even when I revise my resume and I send them out for
comments, I receive none from the recruiters (not even any
criticisms). So it has been a very frustrating, teeth-grinding
ordeal...
