What's the best way to see if a windows xp computer has service pack 2 installed?

I've done the following:

1. Right click the "My Computer" desktop icon.
2. Select "Properties"
3. Under the "General" tab it says windows xp and service 1.

Will this change to sp2 once it is installed?

Thanks.

Hi skip9801,

To find out whether you have SP1 or SP2:
Click Start / Run / type "winver" (without the quotes) / OK
If you have SP2, you'll see it in the resulting dialogue.

Another way to find out is to go to the Windows Upstate Website - it
will know if you need to download it or not.

How do I know if my computer is ready to install SP2?
"Go to the Windows Update Web site. Windows Update will scan your
computer. If it lists Windows XP SP2 as an available update, then your
computer is ready for Service Pack 2. Windows Update automatically
offers SP2 to compatible operating systems."

Perhaps you have downloaded it but haven't installed it yet?

How to Install SP2:
"When you finish downloading Service Pack 2, the Welcome to Windows XP
Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard appears. Here's what to do during the
installation:
1. Make sure you have already made a copy of your personal files.
2. In the Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard, click Next.
3. While updating your system, Windows checks your system to be sure
it complies with the Service Pack 2 requirements. Then it archives the
service pack files in case you want to remove SP2 later. Finally, it
installs the service pack. This can take a few minutes, so please
wait.
4. After the installation is complete, restart your computer.

If you have installed SP2, check your security essentials:

"Make sure your security essentials are all marked ON by clicking
Start, clicking Control Panel, and then clicking Security Center. Now
you're ready to start using Windows XP SP2 with Advanced Security
Technologies. "

If you haven't installed SP2 yet, have a look at the entire article,

2", on the Microsoft website.

Thanks for all the helpful information. Something I forgot to ask -
is it correct that for a windows xp sp1 computer is configured for
"automatic updates," only the critical windows updates will be done
automatically but that sp2 will not be automatically downloaded and
installed?

Thanks.

Hi skip9801,

Well, it's hard to keep up-to-date on the absolute latest goings-on at
Microsoft, but I believe by now, XP-SP2 is part of the automatic
update for both XP home & pro. They were supposed to be released Aug
16, but XP-home-SP2 was delayed until Aug 18 and XP-pro-SP2 was
released just this Wednesday, Aug 25.

August 23, 2004:
"The initial schedule called for Microsoft to begin pushing out the
already delayed SP2 to all editions of Windows XP on Monday, Aug. 16.
Systems running Windows XP Home Edition finally started downloading
SP2 on Wednesday, Aug. 18."
"After a nine-day postponement, Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday plans to
start pushing out Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) to PCs running
Windows XP Professional Edition."

"From today, Microsoft is downloading SP2 into computers that have
XP's Automatic Update feature turned on."

If you have a dial-up connection, consider getting the CD rather than
downloading SP2. If you have a lower range broadband, it may take an
hour to download, higher range should not be a problem.
