Question ID: 393896
Is Rao's marinara sauce truly vegetarian? The label doesn't list any
animal-derived ingredients on the label, but the traditional Rao's
recipe that I've found online call for pork or fatback or salt pork.
So the question is... are there any animal ingredients in a jar of
Rao's marinara sauce? (This would be a big find if the answer is
yes.) I'm a vegetarian and whenever I have Rao's marinara sauce I
"sense" that there may be some sort of animal fat present the
ingredients, but can't place it.

Dear collinlovas

I am pleased to say that an email today from Rao?s Sales VP confirmed
that their Marinara sauce is indeed suitable for vegetarians
(ingredients are: imported Italian tomatoes, imported pure Italian
olive oil, fresh onions, salt, fresh garlic, fresh basil, black
pepper, oregano).

Rao?s have launched a new sauce, Southern Italian Pepper & Mushroom
Sauce (Red & Green Peppers, Mushroom, Sweet Onion & White Wine added
to the Marinara base) which I?m told is also suitable for vegetarians.

I hope this answer is reassuring. Please ask for a question
clarification if you require further help.

Thanks for using Google Answers, and buon appetito!

Kind regards

Dear collinlovas

From the label ingredients & as a vegetarian myself I would have no
qualms about eating this product. The recipe in Rao's cookbook gives
the fatback or salt pork as optional - see Amazon.com:

I have contacted the company for a definitive answer & will let you
know as soon as I receive it. Meanwhile, you might enjoy the marinara
sauce tournament reported at "Marinara Madness" by Kelly Alexander, at

Rao's comes out top.
