Hi, I am looking for the best stack style washer/dryer for clothing. I
have the following constraints:
Have a family of 7 with frequent guest visits. We are on a septic
system. We need mid-stack controls so that kids can help with laundry
without using a stool. We prefer the capacity and water consumption of
front loaders. We have natural gas. For me, best means effective and
trouble free with a reasonable array of cloths handling options.

Hi alaskajoe,

There are not as many models of stackable washer/dryers available as
I expected! There were even fewer, one to be exact, with the features
you need. I was unable to find the exact water usage of most of the
washers in my answer, but Home Depot, sponsor of ?This Old House?
says ?At 20 gal. per wash, front-loaders use about half the water
top-loaders use. That amounts to roughly 8,000 gal. of water saved per
year for a family of four. And because they use less water,
front-loaders also use less energy to heat that water -- saving even
more money.?

Consumer Reports says this of stackables: Compact models are
typically 24 inches wide or less (compared to about 27 inches for
full-sized machines of all types) and they can wash 8 to 12 pounds of
laundry. A compact front-loader can be stacked with a compact dryer.
Some compact models can be stored in a closet and rolled out to be
hooked up to the kitchen sink. Price range: $450 to $1,700.

All of the features you want; top loading washer and gas dryer,
controls easily reached by children, very water efficient, and
intended for heavy duty, only appear in one model, the Maytag Neptune
MLG2000. I found very mixed reviews of this model. It seems that
people who bought this model either adored it, or despised it.

Consumer Reports says this of the Neptune Series however: The
Maytag Neptune TL, (not the stackable model, but similar) a
high-efficiency top-loader, set a new standard for excellence. As a
result, we've raised the bar for washing performance, and models that
once scored excellent may now score very good.

Maytag Neptune Series MLG2000 or MLE2000(electric)
?The Maytag is the best stacked washer/dryer on the market. It has all
the features experts recommend for a stackable washer/dryer, and in a
recent product test it demonstrates superior performance over its
peers by a significant margin. The Maytag is much pricier than other
models, but is the only stacked unit reviewers unearthed as having
front-load washing and moisture-sensor drying (which makes it
exceptionally energy efficient). Experts are in wide agreement that
front-loading and moisture sensor machines are your best bet.?
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/house_and_home/stackable_washer_dryers/

http://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/2000AWW.html

?The Maytag's features make it exceptionally energy-efficient. It
offers a minimum of four temperatures and cycles and includes a
self-cleaning lint screen, bleach dispenser and interior drum light.
Experts comment on this unit?s washing and drying ability, noting its
full-size capacity and low noise level. The drawback to all these
features is the price, an estimated $1850.?

?Experts say that you should be sure to measure your available
space before shopping, including clearance for electric cords and the
dryer's exhaust duct, doorways, and potential obstructions leading to
the location. Be aware that most stacked units require a 240-volt
outlet. If you don't have one where you plan to install the unit, you
may need to install one. The dimensions of these units are listed in
our Comparison Chart? The chart is found on this page.

  Bosch Axxis Series
The dryer is electric only, but I am including it for comparison. The
stackable is shown on this site:
http://www.boschappliances.com/laundry/default.asp
http://www.boschappliances.com/customer_care/1492_423.asp

The Axxis series can be placed side by side, or on a stacking
pedestal, with a nifty pull out tray, for folding clothes. However,
the controls may be too high for a child to reach, without a stool.
http://www.boschappliances.com/laundry/1492_1278.asp

?The Bosch exclusive horizontal axis wash system gets your clothes
unbelievably clean, using 70% less water and 79% less energy than a
conventional machine. That?s a savings of over 12,000 gallons of
water and hundreds of hours of energy usage each year. Plus, the high
spin speed, which is double the spin speed of conventional machines,
reduces drying time, thus subjecting your clothes to a lot less heat
and damage from over drying. All this efficiency adds up to hundreds
of dollars of savings each year, while getting your clothes the
cleanest they?ve ever been.? See a close up of the Axxis washer:
http://www.boschappliances.com/laundry/1492_7300.asp
?Bosch has two Axxis? dryers to pair with the Axxis? washers; a vented
and a condensation version. To alleviate the worry of over drying, our
unique Duotronic?Auto Dry System combines three digital temperature
sensors and two moisture sensors to deliver precise drying at the
touch of a button. The Reverse Tumble Action reduces wrinkles, which
means less ironing for you. Moreover, the Anti-Crease Feature kicks on
for 35 minutes after the completed cycle to gently fluff clothes when
they haven't been immediately removed from the machine.?
http://www.boschappliances.com/laundry/1492_7299.asp

?One of two new Bosch washers introduced in 2002, this quality- made
machine turns out the perfect load of laundry, while maintaining
incredible water and energy efficiency. It also fits in a 24-inch wide
space and offers state-of-the-art features. One such feature is the
sensor system, which adjusts for load size, temperature, suds and
balance, providing the optimal wash cycle. ? Cycles are provided for
regular/cottons, permanent press fabrics, delicates and hand
washables. The user can select from 2-5 rinses. A maximum spin speed
of 1000 rpm takes much of the moisture out of wet garments and makes
drying a snap. This model has a 13lb. capacity, smaller than a typical
American-style machine. If its smaller size, doesn't concern you, look
no further.

?The Bosch WFR2460 Axxis Plus Front Load Washer provides energy and
water efficiency that´s hard to beat - it´s even EnergyStar rated
(EnergyStar ratings apply to the most energy efficient washing
machines and other appliances). Bosch has produced a front loading
washer that uses 70 percent less water and 79 percent less energy than
conventional top loading washers, and it cleans better to boot! With
this washer, Bosch has taken the advanced design of a front load
washer and added their Logixx control system- so the machine does all
the work of selecting the optimum tumble action time and speed, water
level, soak time, and more, while the Sensotronic sensor array
constantly monitors the wash throughout the cycle for temperature,
sudsing, balance, and more. Simply select the fabric and water
temperature, and the washing machine does the rest, producing the
optimum level of cleaning every time! The Bosch WFR2460UC features an
electronic LCD display that shows you, in real-time, the cycle, the
amount of time remaining in the wash, and more. With the advanced
controls, you can even put your clothes in this washer and delay the
wash cycle for later! In addition to the energy and water efficiency
afforded by the WFL2060, Bosch also offers 8 different cycles, with
the versatility top wash any of your clothes, including a cycle for
hand-wash-only items. With the gentle drum cradle action and the
gentle spin cycle (and the fact that front load washers lack the
agitator found in top load washers), you may never have to hand wash
again!?

Apex, by Thor, around $1,000 USD
Top loading washer and dryer, but dryer controls are on top. Also,
recommended for families of 5 or less.

http://www.thorappliances.com/capacity/apexcap.php
This model does use significantly less water, however. This page has a
chart outlining the water use. According to the chart, this model uses
14.6 gallons of water per large load cycle.
http://www.thorappliances.com/comparison/index.php

?One part stand-alone dryer, one part washer/dryer combination. Put
them together and you have the APEX by Thor. Like many great
innovations, the idea is quite simple. Take the efficiency of a
washer/dryer combination, add the power of a newly-designed 220-volt
dryer, and you have a versatile laundry system. According to the
company, the APEX is perfect for a last-minute wash or the rigors of a
weekend of laundry. Set the Thor washer/dryer as you leave for work,
and you?ll return home to clean, dry clothing. Or, if you prefer to
tackle a week?s worth of laundry on Saturday afternoon, the APEX can
help speed through the process. Key benefits include gentle cleaning
with the Turbo-Roll wash system and two independent dryers for dual
drying power. Thor Appliance Company, 877/877-0540.?

Other things to consider:

·Initial Cost. Front-loaders cost more than top-loaders because the
suspension is heavier-duty and the drive is converted from vertical to
horizontal axis. The front-loaders cost an average of $300 - $400 more
per machine than the top-loaders. This cost is recouped over time,
however, in savings in water and energy costs.
·Bending over. The front-load machines require you to bend over a bit to att
end the load. Some models, such as Maytag's Neptune (pictured above),
come with an angled, cut-away door which pretty much eliminates this
problem, but the Maytag is also more expensive than other models.
·Limited color and design options. Most models are available in white
or almond. Color availability will increase as the front-loaders
become more popular. Some models such as Kenmore and Frigidaire offer
stacking washer/dryer units. Maytag's Neptune model is only available
as a side-by-side unit.
·Washing single items, such as a sweater, towel or jeans is not
recommended. As the machine tumbles the load prior to final spin, it
may sense an out-of-balance load. The machine will stop, and re-start,
and will complete the load, but the items will feel wet at the end of
the cycle because of reduced water extraction. This can be corrected
by adding items to balance the load. This does not apply to single
bulky items like sleeping bags, blankets or throw rugs.
http://eartheasy.com/live_frontloadwash.htm

?Because of the way they agitate, front-loaders require a
different, lower-sudsing detergent. Both washer and detergent
manufacturers recommend a detergent specially formulated for
front-loaders. According to the New York-based Soap and Detergent
Association, simply using less regular detergent can eventually lead
to dingy, stained clothes.
Unfortunately, these new-tech detergents aren't widely available in
stores. Nor are they expected to be until front-load washers make an
impact on the market. For now, the new detergents are available with
the new machines and through mail order.?

Alaskajoe, I?m afraid your choices are limited. Very limited. Limited
to the Maytag Neptune! You will have to decide if the Maytag Neptune
series is worth the risk, but it appears to be your only choice! It
does have all the features you are seeking, and is very water
efficient. The extra fast spin dry makes drying extra efficient also.
If you select this model, you may want to consider the maintenance
contract, in case you have a problem with the circuit board! There
were indeed some poor reviews, but overall, it got good marks, and
*surely* they have improved! After all my research, I would recommend
the Neptune model, for meeting all your needs, and you may be one of
the many lucky ones who gets a good model! (I purchased a new
Whirlpool dishwasher 5 weeks ago, that was highly rated. I must have
gotten the lemon model- it worked horribly, and I returned it today!
The store gave me a full refund, and I selected a new Bosch!)

If you decide against the Maytag Neptune model, you really have no
choice but one of the Frigidaire or GE models I have included.
However, they use more water, and have smaller loads.

I am a bit partial to Amana appliances myself, and Amana is coming
out with a stackable washer/dryer later this fall, retailing for about
$1,500 USD. If the Maytag does not appeal to you, and you can wait a
few more months, you could wait and see how the Amana fares!

I hope this will help you come to a decision on a washer/dryer. I
wish there hade been more of a selection with your desired features!

further, if possible.

Hey Crabcakes,

Thanks for the answer and a confirmation of what I believed was true.
I have owned the Maytag Neptune stack for several years. While I had a
couple of warrantee service calls at first related to the problems you
discovered, it has worked flawlessly since then. They *surely* did
improve it.

After reading your thorough answer, I will again go out and purchase
the Maytag Neptune Stack. Consideration of the Amana will have to wait
till next time.

I really liked many of the other stack models, but putting the
controls inconveniently up above standard eye level makes them
difficult to use for other reasons. These will be great for taller
adults.

Cheers,
Alaskajoe
