Question ID: 394100
Hello.
I'm Amit Sanghvi, an IT professional.
I'm looking for some kind of 'free code'/application/tutorial which
can help me build a web page where i can enter a post code and a
distance (ie 5 KM) and i should get back all the hotels within the 5
km area around the post code.
(something on the lines of : http://www.findachevron.com/oilchange/
ofcourse, i will want it for UK post codes ... don't mind if it is generic)

I will need to know how will i be able to access the GIS data needed
for such an application. Will it be central located at some website,
or will i need to buy it and load it into my database or can i get
free of cost?

I would prefer the code to be in PHP or JAVA or PLSQL (oracle)

I am not sure if my questions are clear. If you need any
clarrifications, do let me know.
Thanks.

Thanks for the comment Crythias.
I could've used the suggestion, but i'm going to have to build a
custom database of locations and buildings, and i'll need to get
results from within that.

Thanks again though.

Thanks for the efforts guys.
Though I should say, I am not getting the comprehensive answers that
I?m expecting of Google answers.
I would like options, both paid (low cost) and free.

http://thomsonlocal.com/ is one for UK. local.yahoo.co.uk uses its results.

I *suppose* you could write something that interfaces with that site?

You could use Open source API to read the GIS data (This data you
could purchase form any store - it is the same CD which is used for
Navigation systems in Car).
