During the Reagan funeral coverage on tv, I saw a clip several times
where he listed what he saw as the essential traits of America and/or
Americans - goodness, optimism, faith, etc (something like those, I
can't remember exactly). I'd like to find that speech, but have so
far failed. A link to the complete speech is what I'm looking for,
tips for audio and/or video of the speech.

Hi,

President Reagan seems to have made quite a few statements similar to
what you're describing.

Could you be thinking of his second inaugural address?

"...if we meet this challenge, these will be years when Americans have
restored their confidence and tradition of progress; when our values
of faith, family, work, and neighborhood were restated for a modern
age..."

Or possibly the 1985 State of the Union speech?

"Now, there's another great heritage to speak of this evening. Of all
the changes that have swept America the past 4 years, none brings
greater promise than our rediscovery of the values of faith, freedom,
family, work, and neighborhood.
 We see signs of renewal in increased attendance in places of worship;
renewed optimism and faith in our future; love of country rediscovered
by our young, who are leading the way. We've rediscovered that work is
good in and of itself, that it ennobles us to create and contribute no
matter how seemingly humble our jobs. We've seen a powerful new
current from an old and honorable tradition--American generosity."

Does anything here sound familiar?

it's the former speech, though not the block you quoted... I can't
believe I missed it when I was looking.

"a general falls to his knees in the hard snow of Valley Forge; a
lonely President paces the darkened halls and powers -- ponders his
struggle to preserve the Union; the men of the Alamo call out
encouragement to each other; a settler pushes west and sings a song,
and the song echoes out forever and fills the unknowing air.

It is the American sound.

It is hopeful, big-hearted, idealistic, daring, decent, and fair.
That's our heritage; that's our song. We sing it still."

You got it - thanks!
