As I made the mistake of getting Maple instead of Mathematica,
I am now wretched, miserable, flailing about, and frustrated beyond
belief.

NO, I DON'T WANT TO USE THE LAME GUI!!! I WANT TO TYPE INTO A CONSOLE WINDOW!!!
Furthermore, I want the "results" (if you can call the feeble processing
Maple does by that name) to be output to the console window in a format which
I can cut and paste right back into the console window as valid input.

$5.00 to whoever can tell me how to manage that one.

Grumble, grumble, gripe...

Have you tried using <a href="http://www.octave.org">octave</a>? It
doesn't do symbolic calculations, but has no restrictions on matrix
sizes (unlike the student edition of Matlab). For symbolic
calculations, nothing beats Mathematica AFAIK.
