Question ID: 394297
I'm looking for a plastic surgeon (more specifically, the best plastic
surgeon available, but I cannot travel to New York City or Los
Angeles, so I've turned to Goolgle Answers) for my daughter's
rhinoplasty. Our circumstances have limited our map to Alabama,
Louisiana, and (perhaps obviously), the Northern half-or-so of
Florida. No location preference within those limits, except perhaps
larger cities, where I presume the best would have taken/set-up their
practices.

I know that I personally have spent several hours researching this
myself to no avail, and would be more than happy to hike up the price
of the question, clear up anything I've left too vague, etc etc.
Infinite thanks to whoever can answer this...

Wouldn't it be marvelous if it could be guaranteed that a GA user
would be paying for an actual SERVICE, as opposed to paying for what
could turn out to be absolutely nothing?

Yes, it would be.

Hi internetjones,

Well, you have your work cut out for you, picking a rhinoplasty
surgeon is not easy. The easy part is coming up with a list of fully
capable surgeons, but then only you and your daughter will be able to
determine which is the right one for her. When you go in for
consultations, make sure you ask to see a portfolio - choose a doctor
who you not only feel comfortable with, but who also seems to conform
to your own particular tastes (he might have a thing for wider noses
while your daughter may prefer a narrow nose). Also, the 'most
expensive job' doesn't ensure 'the best job'. You are wise to look for
a surgeon who is close to your home, as follow-up visits after surgery
are very important for proper recovery.

I'm not able to choose the "best plastic surgeon available" for your
daughter but I can help you make a informed decision. I have
researched this topic extensively for someone else (she had already
had surgery but was not happy with the results ("revision surgery",
making revisions of the revisions, is not uncommon) and I can draw on
my research to help you. Please click on all of the following links -
each contains alot of information, too much to post here.

Checking Doctor Credentials:
"To verify that your doctor is certified by the American Board of
Plastic Surgery, you can go to http://www.abms.org or call ABMS at
1-800-776-2378 or 866-275-2267. You may also be able to find The
Official ABMS Directory of Board Certified Medical Specialists at your
local library. You will also want to look for a doctor who specializes
the particular area of the body that you are having work on.
Your State Medical Board will also have information about board
certification, disciplinary action, education and license
verification. Find your State Medical Board.
You will also want to find out if your doctor has hospital privileges.
Even if the procedure will not be performed at the hospital (and 53%
of cosmetic surgeries are not), some feel it is important to know that
your doctor is qualified and has the necessary training to be
accepted. The ASAPS states that "it is important to find out if the
doctor has operating privileges in an accredited hospital for the same
procedure you would like to have performed. Before granting operating
privileges, hospital review committees evaluate a surgeon's training
and competency for specific procedures. If the doctor does not have
hospital privileges to perform your procedure, look for another
surgeon."
The American Medical Association (AMA) will provide biographical
information on 4 doctors for $60.00. Your local library may also have
The American Medical Directory (published by the AMA) which lists the
affiliations of its members. Write: AMA, Department of Physician Data
Services, Dept. P, 515 N. State St. Chicago, Illinois 60610."

The Doctor Background Check Search (fee based):

license and license related actions, including disciplinary actions,
sanctions, consent orders, consent agreements, dismissals,
non-disciplinary communications, advisory letters and other licensing
information. Use the Doctor Background Check to search state medical
governing boards to research a physician's professional standing or
locate and research a medical expert witness."
