Question ID: 394860
I am fairly new to sys admin stuff and will be running Mailman on a
Linux VPS. I have the option of running any of the following
distributions as root. I would like to know if one of them plays
better with Mailman than any of the others, and if not, which one
would be a good one for a newbie who is learning but wants something
powerful and scalable?

I am leaning toward RedHat 9.0 but am open to expert recommendations
as I am a fast learner. Thank you.

CentOS 3.1 (RHEL) 600
Debian 3.0r1 (Small) 80
Fedora Core 1 450
Gentoo Linux 2004-06-29 550
Mandrake 9.1 (Large) 1300
Mandrake 9.1 (Small) 775
Red Hat 8.0 (Small) 450
Red Hat 9.0 (Large) 1700
Red Hat 9.0 (Small) 550
Slackware 10 (small) 230
Slackware 9.0 (Small) 450

mailman needs:

1) MTA like postfix, exim, sendmail or qmail are fine
2) Apache web server with CGI support
3) Python 2.3.3

Any UNIX/Linux/BSD operating system supports above can use mailman.

Go with Fedora Core x, or Debian as they are good stable and easy to learn.

I can't imagine that any major app "plays better" on one distribution
than another. At least, isn't that what POSIX is all about? I use
FreeBSD at home and work. I use it because I can run practically
anything POSIX, and I don't have to worry about SCO suing me. :)

I concur with vivekgite-ga; Mandrake and Gentoo have hard core
followers as well. What is the importance of the second number in your
list, boettiger? Install size? price?

IMHO, there are very few things that really matter in the distribution
after the app/s is/are installed. I think the key is what your
political leanings are with regards to the distribution. I'm serious!
:). At the end of the day, there are those who just want an app
installed and those who want to have uber control over everything.
Frankly, it's all about the apps and drivers, I think. If your
distribution can't run on your hardware, then it's useless. :).
