I am interested in getting some information on fetal monitoring while a woman is in labor. Electronic fetal monitoring is done either with an external device put on the mother?s abdomen or an internal device that has an electrode attached to the fetal scalp. I have been able to find out how many times electronic fetal monitoring (both external and internal) was performed in the U.S. in a given year from the National Center for Health Statistics. What I need to know is the breakdown for how often internal fetal monitoring is used compared to how often external fetal monitoring is used. If an exact number isn?t available, a percentage of births for internal versus external will be okay. If there is data on the number of hospitals/clinics that use internal fetal monitoring, that will be helpful too. I already have a pretty good idea of what fetal monitoring is, so I don't really need information on what a fetal monitor does or who manufactures them. If there are any questions, I will be happy to clarify. |
