Last month I attended the MTV Movie Awards, and a few rows away from
me was Ewan McGregor, and he was wearing a sleaveless shirt that had a
big "X" written on it. I am intterested in finding a place on the
internet that sells that shirt.
Here is your research job, find me the company that made the shirt,
and hopefully the style of the shirt. But the MOST IMPORTANT thing
is find me a place online where I can buy the shirt right online.
HELP: Here is some help I can give you, he won an award, and he
presented on also, so you probably saw him on screen wearing that
shirt if you watched the show.
I also found a picture on the MTV website of him wearing "THE SHIRT",
here is the link:

Second Pic:

THIS IS NOT JUST A REGULAR T-Shirt. IT IS MORE TICKER, AND HAS
PATCHES ON TOP.
PLEASE HELP ME. I REALLY NEED TO FIND A WAY TO GET THIS SHIRT!
THANKS!!! |

lawguy,
Thanks for your question: the pictures are a big help.
I'll bet your $15 that this is a *not* a stock shirt design. It looks
like a custom job, maybe done right on the spot. Perhaps E.M. happened
to walk by the set decorator's paint cans during the MTV rehearsals.
;-)
You can find crew-necked shirts like this (it's actually called a
"commando sweater") from several online sources:
Fatigues Army Navy & Surplus Gear Co.
Genuine USMC Commando Shooting Sweater (Crew Neck)

Sharza International
Pullovers and Sweaters

Brigade Quartermaster Ltd.
Woolly Pully® II Superwash Navy Blue- Crew Neck

Blauer Manufacturing
201 CREW-NECK SWEATER

- Find a distributor in your state
(http://www.blauer.com/distributors.htm)
F & F and A. Jacobs & Sons, Inc.
Uniforms and Accessories
Commando 200/210/201 - 2 X 2 Rib Knit Sweater
http://www.rjuniform.com/blauer.htm
Once you've got the sweater, have someone who can sew trim off the
sleeves and hem the shoulders so they don't unravel. If none of your
friends (or their relatives) have a sewing machine, local dry cleaning
shops can usually do alterations like this. BTW, save the cut-off
sleeves for a later step.
As for the "X", you can see that the entire shirt is covered with
thick, corduroy-like vertical ribs (something you probably noticed at
the show). Take a look at this enhanced version of the backstage E.M.
picture:

If the above link doesn't work, go here instead. Open up the "emshirt"
photo album and double click the "emshirt.jpg" thumbnail image:

The white X obviously looks like it has been painted on, probably with
a standard short-napped (or foam rubber) paint roller about 2"-3"
wide. Notice how the white paint stays on top of the ribs and doesn't
get down into the valleys. If you laid your shirt over a firm surface
-- an ironing board with its pad removed -- you could get the same
result using flat white acrylic latex (or liquid vinyl) paint. Get
tools and paint from your local hardware store, and practice roller
strokes on the cut-off sleeves.
Once you have the technique down, you could probably turn these custom
shirts out pretty quickly. You might even sell them and make a few
bucks on the deal.
What do you think? Is this your Answer?
If so, I'll repost this as the official Answer and you can get started
on the latest fashion craze.

Sorry, although that was a great try, and those shirts look really
good, I am looking for a place online where I can buy the shirt ready
made, the sleaves cut off and the "X" already on it. It would be too
much work for me to buy it, then have the shirt redone, then take it
and have an X put on.
The answer I am looking for is a place I can buy the shirt online
already made the way Ewan McGregor had it.

lawguy,
Since you're on such a tight deadline, and I suspect that you live in
Los Angeles (the MTV Movie Awards were held in Hollywood's Shrine
Auditorium - http://www.seeing-stars.com/Landmarks/Shrine.shtml), I
would think that you could find a suitable "commando sweater" at a
local Army-Navy surplus store.
Take it to a costume shop and have them do a rush job. You could
probably have an X shirt in a day or two.

Thanks huntsman, but I really want it done the exact way he had it,
and have it fast. that is why I am interested in having a ready made,
to buy. I would like to have it a designer shirt if possible, I don't
really want to be taking pictures to a costume shop for them to make
one for me.
