outlook 2000 keeps closing by itself. just started doing it about one month ago. reloaded/repaired it, scanned for viruses, no help. hardware is toshiba satellite laptop, 2.7 ghz celeron with 480 mb ram. xp home edition. also tried going back to an earlier restore point. no help. appears to do it only when not being used actively. |

The only thing I have ever heard of that shuts down a 'puter intermittently is a bad fan! Overheating...yep. And I've NEVER heard of Outlook shutting down and I supported Outlook since BEFORE 2000 came out. I'm thinking it's a hardware issue. I hope you get your answer. :) |

Many different things could be causing your outlook to close and you are right if that is the only application giving you trouble than it is not a hardware or fan or overheating problem. More than likely it is a corrupt file that outlook needs to access when running. What I would do to trouble shoot this problem is to watch for what activities are taking place when it closes itself and creates an error. It could be an action in Outlook that is triggering an error such as if you have it set to check your mail every X number of minutes. When it gets to that minute threshold and does a check for mail it may cause a problem and shut it down (For example). Their is rarely a way to figure out exactly what is causing it and if you do it is often only fixed if you have more access to the source code that a regular user wouldn't have. The best option for you will be to do a complete backup of all your outlook settings and files. You can do this by choosing export from the file menu and creating a exported backup .pst file of all your mail and settings. When this is done you can uninstall and reinstall outlook. When you have determined that your new copy of outlook is functioning correctly you can than do an import of the .pst file and restore all your settings to the original state. Essentially what you are doing is pulling off your personal data from the program. Reinstalling the core program and then pushing your personal files back onto the system. That will be the most effective way of ensuring that you have a system that will be stable and work for you for your email or calendar or whatever. I hope that helps you out! -ryan |
