Dear policajo,
As of January 9, 2004, WLIR, owned by Jarad Broadcasting was sold to
Univision, the biggest Spanish-language radio company in America.
?And now, when you tune your dial to 92.7, anywhere in the New York
City, New Jersey, or Connecticut areas, you get to listen to the
finest ?Latino Mix? this side of Tijuana.?

Univision Radio Launches WZAA 92.7 FM to Serve Long Island, New York
and Connecticut

Last January the Morey Organization of Garden City sold the 92.7 FM
frequency to Univision, the Spanish-language media company for $60
million.
?The station was attractive to Univision because it reaches parts of
Suffolk County, Nassau County and New York's five boroughs, as well as
parts of Westchester, New Jersey and Connecticut.?
A station picking up some of WLIR's listeners is WFUV, the public
radio station based at Fordham University in the Bronx.
?While the disappearance of WLIR has left behind thousands of
aggrieved fans, it has created an opportunity for WMJC (94.3 FM) and
WFUV (90.7 FM) to expand their audiences on the Island. And the call
letters ''WLIR'' live on. The Morey Organization has resurrected them
at 107.1 FM for a hard-rock station called the Box, but that's little
solace for the cult of 92.7 FM.?
A former WLIR listener who now tunes in to WFUV says:
''It's a really interesting mix,'' he said, explaining that he can
still hear Depeche Mode's ''Personal Jesus,'' a former favorite, but
instead he can listen to Johnny Cash's version of it on WFUV.
WFUV is also picking up where WLIR left off by promoting concert sites
like Inter-Media Arts Center in Huntington and the Downtown club in
Farmingdale.
As for the new WLIR, at 107.1 FM, it does not share the musical
outlook of its predecessor. It rocks much harder.
Gina DeGregorio, a Morey Organization spokeswoman, said the Box,
unlike the old WLIR, doesn't play that ''deep, obscure music from the
80's.'' Its current rotation features heavier-sounding acts like the
Offspring and Linkin Park. The station reaches listeners only in
Suffolk County.?

WLIR?S LABOR DAY FLASHBACK WEEKEND
?Throughout the 80?s and 90?s there was one station that blazed a path
for others to follow. New wave, alternative, and modern rock artists
all got their first commercial radio spins on one innovative station,
the world famous WLIR. This often imitated but never duplicated
heritage station will be paying tribute to its past this Labor Day
weekend. From Friday September 3rd at noon through Monday September
6th at midnight tune into WLIR 107.1FM as we take you back to the
eighties and nineties with the songs that you grew up on. All weekend
long you will hear original WLIR imaging, artist interviews, vintage
live concerts, Shreeks and Screamers of the week, some special guests
and most and foremost the music that shaped a generation.?
