HISTORY: Clusius and the Cedar Tree

I'm looking for details relating to the French medical botanist
Carolus Clusius and his relationship to the cedar tree, which he named
"arbor vitae," after he'd seen the tree in the gardens at
Fontainebleau.

What year did he see this tree?
How could he be in Fontainebleau when most of his adult life was spent
in exile from France due to his reformest convictions?
Who brought the tree to Fontainebleau? Cartier? Drake?
Did it originally come from eastern Canada?
Was it actually the tree we know now as eastern white or red cedar?
Clusius must have seen cedar before, i.e., cedars of Lebanon, and
known about their properties.
Why was he so taken with this particularly type of cedar?
Are there any translated (into English) notes from Clusius about this
meeting with the cedar tree?
Also any personal information about Clusius would be appreciated:
temperament, spiritual inclinations, wife and children, etc.
