Dear probonopublico,

The answer is yes. By comparing the results of presidential elections
with the list of presidents, we find that there have been nine
occasions on which a sitting president lost his re-election bid.

InfoPlease: Presidential Elections, 1789?2000
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0781450.html

White House: The Presidents of the United States [by date]
http://www.whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/index2.html

These occasions are the following.

1800: John Adams (Federalist) loses to Thomas Jefferson (Dem.-Rep.)

1828: John Quincy Adams (Natl. Rep.) loses to Andrew Jackson (Democratic)

1840: Martin Van Buren (Democratic) loses to William H. Harrison (Whig)

1888: Grover Cleveland (Democratic) loses to Benjamin Harrison (Republican)

1892: Benjamin Harrison (Republican) loses to Grover Cleveland (Democratic)

1912: William H. Taft (Republican) loses to Woodrow Wilson (Democratic)

1932: Herbert Hoover (Republican) loses to Franklin D. Roosevelt (Democratic)

1980: Jimmy Carter (Democratic) loses to Ronald Reagan (Republican)

1992: George H. Bush (Republican) loses to William J. Clinton (Democratic)

I have not included any cases where the sitting president failed to
secure his party's nomination, or where a former president who was not
currently in office failed in a later election bid (as Theodore
Roosevelt notoriously did in 1912).

If you find my answer to be incomplete or inaccurate in any way,
please post a clarification request so that I have a chance to meet
your needs before you assign a rating.

Cheers,

leapinglizard

At least half of me, perhaps even three quarters, is human. Thanks for the tip!
