Question ID: 396167
I can't find a copy of a story my parents had on an audio reel-to-reel tape
(it was copied from something else) and I'd like to get it for my
children. I don't know what it was copied from...but it might have
been an LP with storybook kind of thing. I'm not sure.

The story line ran something like this: Two men decide to move to the
Big Rock Candy Mountain because they want to live in a better
place--one of them sings the "Big Rock Candy Mountain" song to
encourage the other. Other animals and a family of rats overhear
their plans and decide to go there as well. Along the way, the animals
sing songs about hating being called "vermin" and being "too pooped to
pop" along the way. When they arrive at their destination, they
discover that a development company plans to knock down everything to
build over it (the evil development guy sings a song about how great
and beautiful their work will be
after they knock down all the ugly trees, etc.). The men and the
animals band together and dress up as ghosts, frighten the
construction men away during the night, and then celebrate at the
end...with a rousing rendition of "Big Rock Candy Mountain" sung
together.

I've searched eBay and Google...now I'm turning this over to someone
with better search skills. I'm interested in any version...LP, movie,
whatever it was originally created in. Help...

A delightful album called "Family Tree," by Tom Chapin, features "The
Big Rock Candy Mountain" as part of a story with an environmentalist
message. Could this be what you're looking for?

Unfortunately, no. I checked out that particular album early on, but
while it has an environmental theme to it, it's not the Rock Candy
Mountain story w/songs that I'm looking for.

Whitty94 --

I'll bet "The Kiddie Rekord King" can help you. Peter Melvoin is one
of the most prominent children's record collectors in the country,
maybe the world. He specializes in '78s, but knows about all vintage
children's records. Best part is he will make you a custom CD or tape
of anything in his collection. I bought something from him a few
years ago (remember "The Churkendoose" performed by Ray Bolger?) and
he's the nicest man in the world. If he can't help you, I'll bet
he'll know who can.

His website is great fun to look at, regardless.

I tried him and he replied that he only has information about older 78
rpm records (1959 and earlier, for the most part). He replied that he
didn't know anything about LPs from the 60s or 70s (which is when the
record in question was probably produced).

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

whitty94,

I have the album in question: the story is from the LP "Rock Candy
Mountain - Revisited", released by Golden Records (#LP 272) in 1971
(no book was included). Generally it's a story about pollution, and
at the end asks us what would we do to prevent it from happening.
Some of my favorite songs on the album are "Garbage City" (the music
reminds me of one of the cop/detective shows from the early 70's),
"Rock Candy Mountain" and "Priorities (Ain't it Somethin'/It Ain't
Fair)". Let me know if you'd like a tape of it!

This sounds like exactly what I was looking for! I would love a copy
of that! How do I get in touch with you?

Thanks a million,
Deanna
