About twenty years ago I read a book about an Ivory hunter in Africa
who shoots an elephant but doesn't kill it. The book describes the
hunter's journey to track the elephant and finish it off. At the end
the hunter and the elephant are both dying and crippled and the hunter
must decide who to spare the suffering with his one remaining bullet.
I believe the book is titled The Last Ivory Hunter but I might be
mistaken. This is not the book by Peter Capstick titled "The Last
Ivory Hunter: The saga of Wally Johnson".
My questions are:
1. Who wrote the book?
2. What is the title?
3. When was it published?

Was this a fictional or biographical book?

If it was biographical, does the name "Fernie" sound right?  If so, I
