Carpet Usage in Europe
?The UK has the highest consumption of carpets in Western Europe and
North America, at 3.9 m2 per person, nearly twice as much as the next
highest carpet consumers, The Netherlands and Germany, at 2.6 m2 per
person. In contrast, Finland, Norway and Sweden consume only 0.4 m2
per person between them; in these countries the major trigger of
asthma is cat and not mite allergen.
France UK Italy
It has also been reported that 98% of British homes have fitted
carpets, compared with 16% in France and 2% in Italy.?

Dear Emenar,
Although the following information is not exactly what you asked for,
I believe it may be of your interest.
From Bonjour 2003:
?. . . you don't see wall to wall carpet very often in French homes.
They go for various tile, ceramic, wood floors with area carpets for
accent. One attitude (though quite subtle) that I picked up on from
European friends was that wall to wall carpet was considered a bit
unsanitary in that you couldn't take it outside and put it in the sun
and fresh air from time to time, and it just trapped germs and
allergans that were harder to remove than from wood or stone or tile
floors. Actually the USA is the only country in the world in which I
have noticed general usage of wall-to-wall carpet, that is carpeting
that covers the entire room and is permanently attached to the floor.?

Textiles, Interior Textiles & Carpets Market in France
CARPETS
?In 2002, French consumption of textile floor covering amounted to 78

Euros as they estimate that there is a discrepancy between figures in
Euros and in square metres. However, the French market for textile
floor covering is estimated at ?421.5 million. Sales of textile floor
covering continue to decline in line with the current trend - 93
million m2 in 1998 and 91 million m2 in 2000:.?
In 2002, the breakdown of sales by type of product was as follows:
?Tufted carpets represented 50% of the total market. Sales declined by
13% compared to 2000. Consumption reached 40 million m2 (approx.
?246.8 million).?
?Needle punched carpets accounted for 40% of sales. Sales declined by
19.77% compared to 2000. Consumption reached 28 million m2 (approx
?48.2 million).
Woven carpets accounted for 10% of sales. Consumption fell by 11.5% to
10 million m2 (approx. ?126.2 million)?
?French production of carpets in volume reached 90.5 million m2 in
2000 and fell to 67.1 million m2 in 2002.?
?French imports of carpets amounted to 56.9 million m2 showing a
decline of 17.18% when compared to the figures for 2000 (68.7 million
mē). Exports declined by 31.59% (45.9 million mē (2002)) over the same
period.?
