I would like to purchase a complete UK Electoral Roll database (not as an application such as offered by 192.com) but as a data set. I know I can purchase individual records and datasets from each of the local authorities but I would like to purchase the complete UK database. There are a lot of companies out there offering services based on searching this dataset so it cannot be too hard to get hold of but after several hours of google searching I cannot find a source. Ideally I would like to purchase direct from the UK government but if a private company was offering the dataset at a reasonable/competitive price then this would also be an option |

Until recently, any company, organisation or person could buy a copy of the UK electoral register. But the Government has changed the law so that voters have some choice about who can buy thier name and address details. Under the changes there are two versions of the register: the full version and the edited version. The full register has the names and addresses of everyone registered to vote and is updated every month. Anyone can look at it, but copies can only be supplied for certain purposes, such as elections and law enforcement. Credit reference agencies are also allowed to use the full register, but only to check a name and address for credit applications, and to help stop 'money laundering'. Anyone who has a copy of the register will be committing a criminal offence if they unlawfully pass on information from it. The edited register is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose. Voters can choose not to be on it. It is kept separate from the full register and updated every month. The edited register can be bought by any person, company or organisation and could be used for different purposes such as checking your identity and commercial activities such as marketing. We are only intersted in the edited register but cannot find a source to purchase it, enquiries to the Electoral Commission have not been responded to. Do you have a link which shows you can actually order it as a single unit? |
