I believe I have found the recording you remember. In the (unlikely,
I think) event that I am wrong, please post a "request for
clarification," and I would be happy to continue the search.
Based on your description, I believe the recording you heard in the
bookstore was Louis Chedid's recording of "Papillon." It is contained
on his 1994 CD called "Entre Nous 1994," as well as on a 2003
compilation called "Botanique et viellies charrues."
His rendition meets your description exactly -- light voice, acoustic
guitar, repetition in the chorus of the word "papillon." Here is a
link to Chedid's Web page that contains his discography. Just click
on "Entre Nous" and then click on the "Papillon" track for a 45-second
RealPlayer audio clip. If this link takes you to his home page
instead, just click on "Discographie" ond proceed as described above:

The audio clip provided above does not include the chorus with its
telltale repetition, but here is a link to the complete lyrics, which
includes this chorus:
Papillon du jour, toujours l'amour,
Papillon du soir, toujours mouchoir.
Papillon du jour, toujours l'amour,
Papillon du soir, mouchoir.

The Entre Nous 1994 CD is an out-of-stock import at Amazon.com (and
other U.S. sources), but used copies are available through that
source:

New copies are in stock at Amazon.fr, however:

Search Strategy:
I did a song search for "Papillon" (and variations) at the All Music
Guide site, found here (free registration needed for full access):
All Music Guide
http://www.allmusic.com/
I scanned the search results for likely candidates (e.g., in the
"world" genre) and used the audio clip feature for registered users to
audition those candidates. This turned up the Chedid version as the
best (really, the only) candidate.
I then searched for the lyrics and discovered the repetition that you descibed.
Next, I searched for a more convenient (no-registration-required)
audio clip and found it at Chedid's official website linked above.
Finally, I looked (successfully) for a copy that you could purchase online.
As I said above, I am very confident that this information is what you
are looking for, but, if it is not, please ask for clarification.
