Hello. I have a Dell Precision 1.4GHz machine, 512MB RAMBUS, that I
have WinXP Pro, SP2, and SageTV software loaded on and I am using it
like a TiVo on steroids. I frequently record 2 shows and watch a
third all at the same time. It seems like the computer is at its
limits when I do that, and I want to see if that's true.

I am looking for a small, light, and free program that will run in my
system tray that will record the CPU load (most importantly - but
other measurements, too) in to a log file that will index this
information for at least several days at at time. I don't care how
clunky the interface is, but what is important to me is (not in
order):
- its free
- its light on the system
- it will log for several days or longer, and the log it produces can
be read in other programs besides itself

If it turns out that the 1.4GHZ is being worked too hard, I may want
to upgrade it to about a 2.0GHZ cpu. Feel free to add your thoughts
on that.

Please feel free to ask any clarifying questions. Thanks in advance.

Howdy heavylee-ga,

Would you please check out "Systemometer" and see if it fills your needs.
http://www.iftix.com/systemometer/

Product Features

- monitors performance and system resources
- works as a screen saver, service or thumbnail view
- logs all data in either HTML or CSV format
- supports Windows NT, 2000, XP, and 2003 Server

The personal edition is free to use for personal use. It is a quirky
program (not having the traditional bar graph) but seems to do what
you need. The log file can be configured to a text file, it runs
at low load (8M memory, 0% load on my 1.8 GHz, 1G RAM machine) and it
is free. It is also the only software I could find that has all of
that. Thanks!

Thank you Denco, for your suggestion.

I have downloaded and installed the program on my personal computer,
not the TiVo-like computer, and have spent time learning how it works,
customizing and now I am letting it run for a day or two to make sure
it'll do everything I need and don't need. So far it looks great.

So, give me a day or two to see if I really like this program. In the
meantime, you are welcome to 'lock this question for answering' so no
one steals it away from you.

I'll get back with you soon. Thanks.

Denco,

Thank you again for your efforts, but this program will not cut it for
me. For some reason, it will not start up reliably, either as a
shortcut in the Start > Startup menu or as a service, and I don't have
the time/patience to keep playing with it.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Howdy heavylee-ga,

That is the only program that I found that was free and produced a text
log. There might be some shareware programs that might do what you need.
Did you want to consider those as well? Thanks!

Hello Denco,

I am not totally against paying for this program, but there would have
to be some very compelling reasons to do so. I am willing to consider
it, but its unlikely.

Thanks.
