Using a blogging pseudonym, and the consequences: For a number of reasons, I might want to blog under a pseudonym. A bit of online research suggests that this may, in general, be frowned on. I guess that negative reaction makes sense, if a blog offers harsh criticism of various targets?but if I?m not doing that, would a pseudonym have negative connotations, and if so, why? And, as corollories: Could you change a blog name later, and maintain the identity of the blog? In fact, I have a domain name I might want to use in connection with a blog. I take it I can use the name as one part of my blogsite name, in relation to the blog ?host? name. But then does my domain name remain searchable by itself, on the Net? (And what if I use that domain name later, on a differerent host, or as an independent site URL?) I realize you can?t answer every permutation of this, but maybe the main aspects can be addressed in a few paragraphs. Thanks! |

If I'm understanding what you're saying, you seem to be confusing blogs with some kind of special hosting. Blogs are nothing more than special software that stores and displays your data. I do believe that, if you're the one in control (the admin) in the blog software, you could certainly go change a moniker to a real name or vice-versa. Anyone who tells you that you shouldn't post under a pseudonym has problems understanding that not everyone is unrestricted in their internet usage or is able to openly state their opinions. I think it's rude when they say "why don't you use your real name?" I have worked at places where my employment agreement forbade it. Now, I have been Dreamboat all over the web and I'm well-known by it. I'm supposed to change to my real name? Heck. I didn't change my name when I got married. It's WHO I AM. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it. For the record, my name is Anne Troy. (I work for myself now, see? Good luck on your blog!) |

To Dreamboat: Thanks for the encouragement. It's appreciated. And your thoughts about reasons for pseudonyms are obviously quite valid. bbb-ga |

A lot of people use not so much a pseudonym but a nic on many boards, and in many other parts of the internet. They aren't so much trying to hide their identity as to project one. i.e. if your name were John Smith, how much better to be known as The Archon if you ran a political site ? It certainly gets you known better and creates a lasting identity wolvies |

Thanks to wolvies for another helpful thought. (I guess "NIC name" is a useful term to know, too.) |
