What do organizations typically spend for strategic planning and
long-range thinking per year or per every 5 years? We are looking for
benchmark data for appropriate levels of investment in strategic
planning.

I am primarily interested in information from successuful
organizations in the healthcare industry and non-profit world.

This questions is highly dependent on the industry.  The industry that
I worked for (infrastructure) was very wise in investments, and
generally spent no more than 10% of total project budget on strategic
planning.  A typical range was 5-10%.
