How can I tell the frequency and the dates my children are searching
for specific sites?

Request for Question Clarification by jbf777-ga on 06 Sep 2004 17:21 PDT
Hello -

This can be done through software that can be purchased and installed
on your system. Are you on a PC or a Macintosh? Would you like me to
list you some options for purchase that would allow you to do this?

Thanks,

Hello -

I thought I would post this as an answer, since additional software
really is the only way to achieve what you're looking to do. If you
have any additional questions, or require further information, please
don't hesitate to ask.

I've searched for the most applicable application for this task, and
I've found Spectorsoft's Spector Pro to be the one to beat.

Available for both the PC and Macintosh, this program will allow you
to go way beyond just logging the frequency and dates of the sites
searched. It is a full fledged surveillance tool for tracking
essentially every movement on your computer, in every application.

From the website:

http://www.spectorsoft.com/products/SpectorPro_Windows/index.html

"Spector Pro is the world's best selling software for monitoring and
recording every detail of PC and Internet activity - in your home or
in your office. Selected as the Editors' Choice by the experts at PC
Magazine, Spector Pro contains seven integrated tools that record:
chats, instant messages, emails sent and received, web sites visited,
keystrokes typed, programs launched, peer to peer file searching and
swapping - plus, Spector Pro provides the equivalent of a digital
surveillance tape so that you can see the EXACT sequence of EVERYTHING
your family members or employees are doing on the computer. All seven
tools work together at the same time, secretly saving all the
recordings in a hidden location only you know about."

PC Magazine has twice awarded this piece of software as its prestigious
"Editors choice" for 2002 and 2004. I've made sure to check with the
company directly to confirm that it will indeed do what specifically
you've requested in your question.

This software is generally around $100; however, there are a few
sources that have it at a discount price. Here's a listing of vendors
from Froogle, starting at the second to last item on this page:

You can see it for $81 at eCost:

$75 from a vendor on eBay with good feedback

PC Magazine has also rated other software in the "computer activity
monitoring" category at this link:

Blazing Tools Software's "Perfect Keylogger" is another program that
has won a bevy of awards from various sources:

http://www.blazingtools.com/bpk.html

According to the website, the "Full Version", at a more economical
price of $34.95, claims a similar feature line-up as Spector.
However, there's no technical support available by phone.

The Spy Tools Directory, available at the following link, lists a
large assortment of similar tools:

There is another website devoted to reviewing such programs:

Of course, you can click on the history button in IE to view where
they've BEEN. Unless they've erased the history. It's the button that
looks like a sundial.

I really hope you did not pay $200 for such a question that requires
such a simple response. There is no need for any software. As
bastian says, all you need to do is click on the history button (it
says "history") on the toolbar or go under "tools" and you can select
it from there as well. It will show you which sites they went to and
when. And it's free! Good Luck.

Yes I am a senior in college majoring in computers and I have an even
better solution to your problem. If your kids have deleted the
history then you can also go to start then click on find. Nearly
every time your kids goes onto a website the website sends a cookie to
your computer. So when you go to find just type in cookies. Then
some subfolders labled cookied will appear. Click one and it will
show the dat, time, and the webaddress that they went to.

Actually, there is no real solution. History, cache and cookies can
all be deleted. Programs can be disabled. The only answer is to
trust your kids.

My kid is 10 and knows how to delete all the history, temporary files,
cookies and muffins. He also knows how to disable any spyware.
The only solution I found was to use a router that logs the inbound
and outbound activity from his computer. The router is password
protected so he can't delete the log. Of course this won't work if he
uses a dial up.
My Linksys does not have a day and time stamp but I believe that Netgear does.
Good lock.

Use XP Pro or similar, then give your kid an unprivileged account.
Then when you set up spyware he won't be able to disable it.

Or, if you have spare hardware, use another system as a proxy and
don't allow communications without using the proxy (for example, by
implementing security on your router that prevents communications with
any node other than the proxy server).

I have a little smart move for you
As files, cookies & history can be deleted and spy software can be disabled
Then the answer is in above line only
Yes the deleted file can be recovered in most of the cases
?only if something is not written on that sector that depends on
operating system but it workes in most of the cases 98% ?
so instant of going for other software?s go for a recovery software
recover the cookies ,history and temp Internet files and you will have
all the information you need?
that could also be free? I am giving you a like for free download ?
then again the problem could be there what? Your kids can disable that
also then????
A smart ideal!
Keep the setup install it when you want 2 use it view the files and
uninstall it feel free

Still wouldn't work. Since most spyware uses explorer.exe as it's base
to monitor, all he would have to do would be to copy internet
explorer.exe to the desktop, rename it to another name.exe. Then he
could terminate the process explorer.exe, and click run new process,
and choose the new explorer created on the desktop. The spyware won't
nottice this, and will not be able to record what's being sent through
the computer. A router that logs information is definately the best.
Also, they have small devices that is more or less an "extension" to
the keyboard plug, and you can bridge the keyboard and the computer
with it. That will also create a log, that you can later recall. But
that's easier to spot, and all he would have to do to keep the
infomation on that from you would be to take it off the computer, find
your hammer, and smash it, or just thow it away...
