Government has on the payroll for each year back to 1950?

Hi marshallgold!
I was able to find monthly data back to 1939; however, it appears to
be the number of both full- and part-time government employees. I
couldn't find any statistics that distinguish between full- and
part-time workers.

Please let me know if this information is OK to you, or if you'd
rather wait for some other Researcher to try and find the precise
information you're looking for.

Best wishes!

That data sounds ideal. I don't need to see it broken out by
part-time and full-time.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi marshallgold!
You can find the data you're looking for at FreeLunch.com

FreeLunch.com
http://www.freelunch.com

You'll need to register (it's free). After registering, click on
"Labor Markets" on the main page. Then click on "Employment". Finally,
scroll to the bottom of the page, and you'll find the item
"Government", also broken down by Federal, State, and Local. If you
click on "Table" next to this item, you'll get a table of the monthly
number of employees since 1939.

As you will see on that page, that information is taken from the
Bureau of Labor Statistics. You can get the same information directly
from their page (although it's yearly and from 1955) in case you are
interested in the methodology used to estimate the numbers. The link
that has the information you need is at

Employment Situation - Bureau of Labor Statistics
http://www.bls.gov/web/empsit.supp.toc.htm

Once you're in this page, find the link called "B-1. Employees on
nonfarm payrolls by major industry sector, 1952 to date" to get the
data (the same numbers as FreeLunch, with an extremely small
discrepancy). You might also be interested in the links under the
title "Technical Notes To Establishment Data Published in Employment
and Earnings" in the same page, in case you're interested in
definitions and how the data was collected.

I hope this helps! If you have any doubts regarding my answer, please
request clarification before rating it, I'll be more than happy to
assist you.

Best regards,
