Trends
According to the Wade publication Environmental Business Journale,
environmental consulting and engineering companies had a domestic
growth rate of 2.2 percent in 2002, compared with 5 percent to 5.5
percent from 1999 through 2001. Paul Zofnass, president of
Environmental Financial Consulting Group, expects 2003 numbers to be
similar to 2002, with companies in the federal government and private
sectors faring better than their counterparts in state and local
government.
"Two factors drive (environmental services)," said Zofnass. "How many
regulations and rules the government is pushing on firms, and the
overall economy, although it takes longer to feel that change."

Hourly billing rates are on the rise by Laura B. Rothman.
Data in ZweigWhite's 2004 Fee & Billing Survey of A/E/P &
Environmental Consulting Firms shows that environmental consulting
firms are charging more with hourly billing rates increased at an
average of 16% over the past five years, with a 6% increase in the
past year. Factors fuelling the rise are inflation, changes in the
consumer price index, increases in staff salaries and increases in
insurance and other overheads.

Environmental consultants see shifts in large, small markets.
Nashville Business Journal. May 3 2002.
Summary:
According to Nashville's local environmental consulting firms
competition with larger national players is fragmented. And depending
on a local firm's expertise, it might have an advantage over a larger
company, depending on the needs of its client base.
The industry is becoming more cost conscious with environmental
consulting jobs often going to the lowest bidder. Environmental
consulting firms are now specializing in fewer areas and relying on a
national client base to support those areas.
Firms focus on specific industries as a way to differentiate themselves.
"The entire environmental consulting industry is consolidating and in
some ways becoming more of a commodity business," says Rob Alley,
president of E. Roberts Alley & Associates, Inc., a Nashville-based
environmental consulting firm.
We are seeing our industrial clients become more driven by reducing
their cost and optimizing their environmental performance," says Jeff
Pintenich, vice president of Brown & Caldwell's Nashville office.
The future of Nashville's environmental consulting business is one of
continuing polarization with fewer opportunities for local companies
to bid on large projects.

Environmental Consulting Firms showed that 42% of firms laid off staff

Sixty-four percent of respondents to ZweigWhite's 2004 Merger &
Acquisition Survey of A/E/P & Environmental Consulting Firms say they
are currently considering buying another firm. That figure is the
highest percentage in three years, with 59% considering buying a firm
in the 2003 edition of the survey, and 60% in the 2002 edition.
The number of respondents thinking about selling their firm dropped
this year to 35% from the 43% interested in selling their firm in the
2003 survey. Twenty-five percent of respondents to the 2004 survey
were interested in merging their firm with another firm, up from 21%
