I need some help trying to remove a free anti-virus program. I'm not
getting anywhere with the company website. I want to remove it because
I bought a new program. I have WIN XP pro. The free anti-virus program
is AVG 6.0 by Grisoft.
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

I want to uninstall it, but get an error (below) if I use the option
from the start/program menu OR if I try add/remove programs from
control program. What do I do?

16 bit Windows Subsystem
c:\windows\system\autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for
running MS DOS amd MS Windows applications CLOSE IGNORE

(neither CLOSE or IGNORE do anything)

Hi mark800!!

I think that the problem is not from the AVG program, the error
message that you are receiving is almost related to the miss or damage
of the file Autoexec.nt .

The solution is simple, you just need to replace the Autoexec.nt file
in your System32 folder.

To do that follow these instructions:

1- Open Explorer --> click on Tools menu --> Folder Options --> Click
on the View tab --> then check the options "Display contents of System
Folders" and 2Show hidden files and folders" --> Uncheck the options
"Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating
system files" (after this last action you will get a warning message
but go ahead anyway) --> click on the button "Apply to all folders"
--> Accept and close that window and then click on View menu -->
Details.

2- Open the C:\Windows\repair folder and copy the autoexec.nt file by
right click and Copy on it.

3- Open the C:\Windows\system32 folder and paste the autoexec.nt file
on it (accept replace old file if necessary).

This task must let you uninstall AVG antivirus.

In that case that you cannot perform the uninstallation, repeat steps
2 and 3 and then restart your computer and try again.

Windows-based program":

--------------------------------------------------------

If nothing of this works, please let me know and I will give you
instructions to perform a manual removing of this antivirus software.
But note that all lead me to believe that the problem is in the
autoexec.nt file and no on the software files.
Feel free to request for any clarification needed.

Best regards.

It maybe that the autoexec.nt file does not exist in the repair folder
either (I had this problem recently also). If this is the case find
another XP user who is willing to help. From their computer copy the
autoexec.nt file from their C:\Windows\system 32 folder onto floppy
disc or cd and paste it from the disc into your system 32 folder.
Good luck!
