I would reccomend getting a Haynes or Chilton manual. These are repair
manuals based on a complete teardown. Both should have pictures
detailing where the oil filter is and procedures for changing the oil.
The manuals will also tell you what special equipment you need, if
any. Generally one needs a socket set, a few rags, an oil filter
wrench, a drain pan, oil and a new filter. Get a torque wrench if you
feel the need.
Generally, one follows te same procedure for almost all engines:
1)Jack the front end of the car up and put it on jack stands. never
leave it on the jack. they can slip.
2)Run the car for a minute to heat the oil and make it viscous.
Position your drain pan under the drain plug on the oil pan.
3)Unscrew the drain plug. Let the oil start to drain and take off the
filler cap on the top of the engine. As the oil starts to finish
draining, rub some of it between your bare fingers. Examine it
closely. You are looking for particulate matter or metal bits, both of
which indicate an engine destroying itself.
4)Unscrew the oil filter and drop it into the drain pan.
5)Put the new filter on. pour a tablespoon of oil into the filter and
rub oil on the gasket/seal. screw the filter on by hand. once it is
hand-tight, use the wrench to tighten it a half or quarter turn, as
specified in one of the above manuals.
6)Put the plug back in the oil pan. Don't over-tighten it. This is
where you would consider using a torque wrench.
7)Fill with the appropriate amount and type of oil. Don't overfill.
Remember that the filter also needs about 1/3 a quart ontop of what
the engine/oil pan takes. Run the engine for 2 minutes. Let it sit for
5. Check the amount oil using the dipstick. Fill as required.
