Could the song you are thinking of be Lovely Lady by Tommy Dorsey?

In case you are uncertain whether rainbow-ga has found the right song,
I can reassure you that this song is almost certainly the one you are
looking for.  I think your mother's recollection about the songwriter
is a natural mistake, since Gus Kahn (not "Halm") wrote very similar
pop music and was a contemporary of the very prominent composer of
"Lovely Lady,"  who was Jimmy McHugh (with Ted Koehler).
