1986 Merc Topaz - alternator drains the battery overnight.  Otherwise
it works fine.  I have to unplug it at night or my batt. is dead in
the AM

Called parastatic drain. You need an amp meter. Do you wish to fix this yourself?

There is most likely a shorted diode in the alternator. If you know
the problem is in the alternator why not replace it?

The same thing happened to a friend of mine, turns out his alarm
system was improperly wired.  Have you recently had anything installed
in your car like a remote starter or new stereo?
