Question ID: 398684
What is the name of this song, and where can I obtain a recorded copy
of it as played on piano solely?

http://home.earthlink.net/~benjaminreavesd/040907004.WAV

My mother played it on the piano decades ago, she would love to hear
it (recorded properly, not like this off the radio) now in her old
age.

Dear benreaves-ga

The music you have there is a rag or jazz version of the music called
FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLEBEE from ?The Tale of the Tsar Sultan? (Skazka o
Tsare Saltane): Rimsky-Korsakov's opera based on Pushkin's comic verse
tale about the Tsar's lost son, who becomes the king of a fairy
island.

Here are some samples of the original classical version from NATHAN
MILSTEIN so you can confirm my findings:

http://www.geocities.com/vienna/5585/bee.ram

And here is a midi file of the classical version from HOPPER?S HOME MUSIC

http://www.geocities.com/hopper01.geo/flightbee.mid

I believe a version similar to the one you have was featured in the
1948 Disney animated picture MELODY TIME:

I have no idea where to get THIS VERSION of the music on tape so your
mother can hear it again but you can easily obtain the CLASSICAL
VERSION on tape or CD (which I will help you find if you like) at just
about any music store as it has been recorded many times by many
different people over the years. However, I hope that by identifying
the song I have answered your question. Please let me know if you need
anything further.

Dear benreaves-ga:

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question. Aside from what I have already offered you, and with the
help of my good friend and adorable colleague ?Pinkfreud? the name of
your song has been found. It is called BUMBLE BOOGIE and it comes from
neither the rag nor the jazz era but at the end of the
(?boogie-woogie?) Swing era of Big Band at the latter part of the
1940?s:

BUMBLE BOOGIE

In fact, there was an animated short by this same name in 1948 that
featured the song:

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0167809/

Wade Preston actually wrote the tune in 1933 while playing with the
Freddy Martin Orchestra. It is indeed based on Rimskey Korsakov?s
?Flight Of The Bumble Bee?. You can hear Preston?s full recording in
near CD quality here:

WADE PRESTON

If you prefer, you can purchase the CD (which includes the BUMBLE
BOOGIE) from his site and take this to your mother as a gift.

In closing I must say that if your mother could play this tune on her
piano she must have burned it up man. She has my greatest admiration
because she is CLEARLY one talented lady.

I hope you find that my research exceeds your expectations. If you
have any questions about my research please post a clarification
request prior to rating the answer. Otherwise, I welcome your rating
and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again
in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.

You can get some really cool versions of this song on Marimba at
http://www.steveweissmusic.com. They have a bunch of arrangements of
the sheet music, and some recordings on Marimba.
