Hi mary4,

The following is the result of my research for the number of abdominal
hysterectomies performed per year in the United States.

"There are approximately 600,000 hysterectomies a year currently done
in the United States, of which 70 percent, or 420,000, are abdominal,"
Dr. Kovac says..."

"Hysterectomy is the second most common operation performed in the
United States. About 556,000 of these surgeries are done annually. By
age 60, approximately one out of every three American women will have
had a hysterectomy."
(...)
"About 75% of hysterectomies performed in the United States are
abdominal hysterectomies. The surgeon makes a four to six inch
incision either horizontally across the pubic hair line from hip bone
to hip bone or vertically from navel to pubic bone. Horizontal
incisions leave a less noticeable scar, but vertical incisions give
the surgeon a better view of the abdominal cavity..."

About 10% of hysterectomies are performed to treat cancer of the
cervix, ovaries, or uterus. Women with cancer in one or more of these
organs almost always have the organ(s) removed as one part of their
cancer treatment.

How common are hysterectomies?
"Hysterectomy is the second most common major surgery among women in
the United States. (The most common major surgery that women have is
cesarean section delivery.) Each year, more than 600,000
hysterectomies are done. About one third of women in the United States
have had a hysterectomy by age 60."

How is a hysterectomy performed?
"Hysterectomies are done through a cut in the abdomen (abdominal
hysterectomy) or the vagina (vaginal hysterectomy). Sometimes an
instrument called a laparoscope is used to help see inside the
abdomen. The type of surgery that is done depends on the reason for
the surgery. Abdominal hysterectomies are more common than vaginal
hysterectomies and usually require a longer recovery time."

being vaginal hysterectomies."

carried out in the United States each year, and 400,000 of them are
total abdominal hysterectomies..."

"Last year, over 650,000 hysterectomies were performed on women in the
United States. Most were performed invasively as abdominal
hysterectomies, while a little more than five percent were done using
minimally invasive techniques. In addition to hysterectomies,
minimally invasive techniques may be used for a number of other
conventional gynecological disorders such as the removal of cysts,
fibroid tumors and the embolization of fibroids."

"Hysterectomy is the second most common operation performed in the
United States. About 556,000 of these surgeries are done annually. By
age 60, approximately one out of every three American women will have
had a hysterectomy. Yet it's estimated that 30 percent of
hysterectomies are unnecessary.
About 10% of hysterectomies are performed to treat cancer of the

remove fibroid tumors, accounting for 30% of these surgeries."

laparotomy. More than 80% of hysterectomies in the United Kingdom are

uterovaginal prolapse are performed abdominally."
