I need a source for the two plastic pieces that form the housing of
the display screen on a Compaq Presario 700 US laptop. These pieces
are what you see around the display screen. Each piece carries a
label with one of the following two numbers, SL 901127.1 or SL
901124.5. In addition, one of the pieces has a label that reads
"Replace with Compaq Spare 254108-001 Z114" In talking to Compaq I
learned this is the number for the entire display unit, a $800 item.
Needless to say, that is not what I had in mind. On the back of the
actual display screen is a Samsung label with the numbers
LTN141XC-L01, 3M1K15619B, and 0147.

Dear alecp4,

The parts you are looking for are often available on eBay, although
you should expect to pay around $100 for them at auction. The front
piece of the housing is called the bezel, while the back piece is the
lid.

At the moment, there is a $60 bid, with less than 2 days left, on what
is listed as a bezel but appears to include the lid as well.

In another auction, the lid and bezel are going for $82 at present,
with 3 days left to go.

In addition to the auctions, there are stores on eBay. The bezel is
available right now as an instant-purchase item for $7.99. Check out
the listing here.

The item is described as the bezel for a 700Z, but notice that the
part number for the LCD unit is given as 254108-001, the same as
yours. If you can do without the lid, this is what you'll want to buy.

To see if the same seller has the lid as well -- he might refer to it
as the "back bezel" -- email rob@themobileone.com and ask about it. If
he doesn't have it now, he'll have a good idea of how often he gets
them in.

It would be simplest but costliest to buy the whole screen integrated
with the housing, and you can certainly do better than $800 on eBay.

Here are three auctions ranging from $10.50 with 5 days left to
$102.50 with 2 days left. Based on past experience, I expect the final
price will be about $150.

Compare that to the $96 winning bid for a lid and bezel.

If you don't like eBay, a new display unit is available for $245 here.

The Compaq Store: LCDs

Your model is third from the bottom. Just above it, for $215, is the
same part, not new but "pulled". Personally, I would shell out the
extra $30 to buy it new.

If you feel that my answer is incomplete or inaccurate in any way, please
post a clarification request so that I have a chance to meet your needs
before you assign a rating.

I never would have thought to look on eBay. A great answer if only
because it blew away one side of my thought box.
