What do you call the phrase, made up of the first letters of a list of words, which will help you remember the list? For example, to remember the US Presidents from Eisenhower to Wilson, the phrase is: Every time Richie howls, Charlie howls worse (Eisenhower, Truman, Roosevelt, .... Wilson) |

Dear ladywordsmith, That kind of word or phrase is known as a mnemonic. They are used in many fields, as this list demonstrates. University of Victoria: Mnemonics (Memory-Aiding Devices) http://www.coun.uvic.ca/learn/program/hndouts/mnemon.html Remember, the initial 'm' in "mnemonic" is silent. Hmm. I should come up with a mnemonic for that. Cheers, leapinglizard |
