How can I change orange colored fabric to a beige or white color? The orange color was the color it was intended to be. I tried bleach, it didn't budge. |

The Rit Color Remover mentioned by bobthedispatcher-ga works quite well on cotton fabrics, as does a similar product called Spectralite. I've used both these products on cottom denim and on cotton tee-shirts, with good results and very little damage to the cloth. If your fabric is anything other than 100% cotton, you are probably out of luck. Many synthetic fabrics will dissolve completely before they will yield up their color. |

Please substitute "cotton denim" for "cottom denim" in my comment above. |

The best people to ask about this are the people who deal with colours every day. How about asking a fabric manufacturer, or perhaps the fabric design department of an art college near you? NB. I noted the title of this question was regarding the removal of permanent colour from fabric. I can't help pointing out that if it could be removed, it wouldn't be permanent! |

This is a beautiful 100% cotton with a sheen to it, and so far, it does appear to be a truly permanent color. I will try the Rit and Spectralite products, and if that doesn't work, I will look into other options. I got many many yards of this at an auction for $.33 and want to get it into a more relaxing color so I can make curtains for the concrete walls in the basement. |

Hello Maroonbells Removal of color from a fabric is called "stripping" or "discharge".A search string-- stripping + fabric + dye + cotton was used and some of the important results is given. www.val-chem.com/.The company's address is Val Chem Co.Inc,P.O.Box 338,Sayre,PA 18840. The company's catalogue has a product called Liquid Stripper and the description reads---Liquid product to strip dye from cotton. Directions on request. www.fabricstodyefor.com/Fabric_Art_Supplies/Dyes/Auxillaries.html.This site offers ready to use textile chemicals. You could be in touch with these companies . You mentioned that bleach was not effective.Bleaching solutions work by the oxidising action of chlorine present in the bleach solutions. This means that your dyed fabric will in all likelihood respond to reducing agents(sort of opposite of oxidising). The commonly used reducing agent for discharging color on cotton fabrics is sodium hydrosulphite called "hydros"in the trade and thiourea dioxide called thiox.Since you have large quantities of fabric, I suggest you consult the above companies before using these chemicals. Some other sites ; www.gsdye.com/canada/chemicals.html ------Discharge paste and directions for use. www.thomasin.com/cotondischarge.ht -------------discharging cotton fabric with chlorine bleach. Discharge dyeing is the process of removing dye from fabrics in ---------http://quilt.com/FAQs/DischargeDyeingFAQ.h... I wish you luck.I am curious about the outcome of your problem. If it is not inconvenient, I would like to know whether you succeeded. Good luck once again |
